Canadians received another blow this week after Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem admitted that the country's economy is deteriorating and warned citizens to prepare for a "lower standard of living."

During an update on Wednesday, in which Macklem also cut Canada's interest rate to 2.25%, the central bank chief effectively told working families that the days of prosperity are over.

"What worries me most is that unless we change some other things, our standard of living as a country, as Canadians, will be lower than it would otherwise be," Macklem told reporters.

"Unless something changes, our income will be lower than it would be under other circumstances."

This grim admission represents one of the clearest warnings yet that years of reckless government spending, high taxes, and runaway inflation under Liberal leadership have brought the Canadian economy to the brink of collapse.

As of October 30th, 64% of S&P 500 companies exceeded profit estimates, well above the historical average of 49%.

Even so, the market continues to "punish" positive results: companies that beat consensus have, on average, underperformed the index 32 bps the following day, compared to a historical average of +98 bps of outperformance.

In other words: the bar has been set too high, and investors seem to demand more than just good numbers.

Strong season, but no award?

Chinese company BYD recorded its biggest quarterly profit drop in more than four years, with a 32.6% contraction in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2024, according to a balance sheet published this Thursday (30).
The result represents the second consecutive quarter of decline and reflects the advance of domestic competition in the Chinese electric vehicle market, especially from brands such as Geely and Leapmotor, which have been gaining ground in the segment of more affordable models.

Net profit totaled 7.8 billion yuan, while revenue fell 3.1% to 195 billion yuan, the first decline since 2020. With the loss of market share in China — which fell from 18% to 14% in one year — BYD revised its sales target for 2025 downwards, reducing it by 16% to 4.6 million vehicles.

Nevertheless, the automaker is betting on international expansion, focusing on Europe and Japan, and continues to offer discounts to maintain its competitive position in an increasingly competitive sector.

BYD’s profit slump marks a new phase in the electric vehicle market race.

Global private credit has already surpassed US$2.5 trillion in assets, driven not only by institutional investors but also by the gradual entry of retail and insurance companies.

This is the consolidation of a structural trend of financial deepening.

Even with the more volatile scenario in Brazil, the growth of this asset class is global and fundamental.

Expanding financing options outside of large banks is key to the development of the capital market and the sustainable growth of companies.
