Which  are the best stock and ETFs to invest $5k?

So I'm happy today as I completed my tiny rabbit cages and farm. I want to get into farming rabbits; a friend told me it's lucrative, and I thought of trying that out.

I've been into poultry farming before and, honestly, I didn't really love it as there came a sudden surge in the prices of feeds, which led to serious capital losses. Just wanted to try this out.

If you've ever raised chickens, you know exactly what I mean. One day you are making a decent profit, and the next, the price of feed skyrockets, completely wiping out your hard-earned money. After counting my losses from that headache, I knew I needed a livestock hustle that is way more budget-friendly and flexible.

That’s where rabbits come in. I’m actually really optimistic about this new journey because, luckily, rabbits are herbivores. Unlike chickens that rely completely on expensive feed, I can easily feed these guys with grasses, weeds, and kitchen scraps alongside some pellets.

Another plus is that they don't need a massive space, which is why my tiny setup fits perfectly in a small backyard corner. On top of that, they multiply like crazy and carry their pregnancy for only about 31 days. My plan is just to start small, learn the ropes, keep feed costs at the bare minimum, and grow the business organically.

Building the cages myself was a lot of work and a whole lot of sweat, but I finally got it done. I had to make sure they are well ventilated, easy to clean, and completely safe from predators. Now that the cages are set up and ready, the next step is stocking. I’m currently scouting for my very first breeders most likely one healthy buck and two does to kickstart the whole thing.

This is a fresh start for me, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’ll be updating you guys on my progress, the challenges, the real costs, and hopefully the first batch of babies right here on my blog as things unfold.

For the experienced rabbit farmers here  please drop some advice for me! What’s the one major thing you wish you knew when you first started out? Let me know in the comments, I'd really appreciate the tips!

The Reality of Modern Construction Costs

Two years ago, I started building a rental property with four self-contained units and three one-bedroom flats. While I was struggling to build, a sudden explosion in the cost of iron, cement, sand, and every other material forced me to abandon the project just to gather enough money to complete it.

The reality of construction has completely changed. Today, if you don't have at least $100,000 or hundreds of thousands of dollars, you simply cannot set up a reasonable block building.

To see how we reached this point, look at the cost of building a standard block home over the last 24 years:
In 2002 and 2003, materials were highly affordable, and you could build a standard home for about $15,000 to $20,000. By 2004 and 2005, rising global demand pushed that baseline to $25,000.

Between 2006 and 2007, a worldwide real estate boom drove the price of iron and steel up, raising costs to $35,000. Despite the economic crash of 2008, 2009, and 2010, prices did not drop; they stabilized and then climbed, reaching $45,000 by 2011 and 2012 due to general inflation.

From 2013 to 2016, rising fuel prices made transporting sand and blocks much more expensive, pushing building costs to $55,000. Continued supply chain tightening from 2017 to 2019 raised the minimum budget to $65,000.

The real shift happened during the global disruptions of 2020 and 2021, which sent manufacturing and shipping costs through the roof. By 2022 and 2023 right when I started my project the cost of a solid block building jumped to $80,000.
Compounding inflation through 2024 and 2025 has brought us to the current reality of 2026.

Today, $100,000 is the absolute minimum entry fee to put up a reasonable block building. Cheap construction is a thing of the past, and pausing my project was the only logical financial move to adapt to this new reality. I wonder what it would be in 2028 to 2030.

Having writing materials on hand is incredibly valuable, especially for noting down scriptures. It creates a lasting record that you can easily return to at any time.
Today, while searching for a rent receipt, I came across an old notebook I haven't seen in years. 

Flipping through the pages instantly brought back memories of my teenage days. It reminded me of so many people from that chapter of my life church elders, pastors, and deacons whom I no longer hear from today. Even though we are out of touch, I can still access their deep scriptural knowledge because I took the time to record their sermons.

It is absolutely essential to always have a notebook with you during Bible study. For instance, I may never hear from Pastor Ofem again, and Apostle Hogan has long since passed away, but because I jotted down their sermons, their teachings remain with me.

We might not see or hear from these foundational leaders again, but every time I open my old notebook, I get to hear their wisdom all over again.

My Personal Math Comparing a Traditional House to a Foldable Home

I have been spending a lot of time looking at the numbers lately, trying to figure out the smartest way to own my own place. My plan starts with buying a piece of land, but once that ground is secured, the real question is what to build on it. Like most people, I initially assumed I would build a standard, conventional block house.

But the skyrocketing cost of building materials has forced me to look at alternative solutions, which is how I got deeply interested in foldable container homes.
When I look at my budget for a traditional building, the costs are incredibly fluid and unpredictable.

Buying sand, cement, gravel, and rods is just the beginning. I have to factor in weeks or months of labor costs, security for the building materials on-site so they don't grow legs, and the inevitable price increases that happen mid-project due to inflation.

A standard two-bedroom block house can easily swallow millions of naira before it even gets to the lintel level, let alone roofing, plastering, wiring, and finishing. It is a slow, draining process, and my money would be tied up for a very long time before the house is actually livable.

This is why the financial model of a foldable container home looks so attractive to my current budget. With a foldable home, the pricing is upfront and fixed. I can buy a fully structured, prefabricated container unit that literally unfolds on-site.

The factory handles the walls, the roof, and the basic insulation before it even arrives. Instead of buying individual bags of cement at fluctuating market prices and waiting months for a structure to rise, I can pay a set amount and have a structural shell ready to go almost instantly.

The cost comparison becomes even clearer when I look at speed and labor. For a normal house, I have to manage a whole team of laborers, masons, and carpenters over a long period. With a foldable container home, the installation takes days, not months. I only need to prepare a solid concrete base or pillar foundation on my land, crane the unit in, and expand it. This massive reduction in construction time means I save heavily on labor costs, which is a massive win for my budget.

Of course, I am realistic about the extra expenses too. The container itself is cheap compared to a brick-and-mortar build, but I still have to budget for transporting it to my plot of land and hiring a crane or heavy equipment to unfold it. I also have to budget for a proper roof overlay and high-quality interior insulation to handle the intense local heat, because a metal box will bake in the sun if it isn't treated correctly.

Even after adding the costs of plumbing, wiring, and proper interior cooling, my budget still shows that a foldable container home can get me safely into my own space at a fraction of the cost of a traditional build. It allows me to secure my land, get a roof over my head quickly, and avoid the endless financial headache of a long-term construction site. For where I am financially right now, it feels like the smartest shortcut to property ownership. What do you think friends?
