Black and white photography is my favorite.. I keep my camera set to monochrome and add color later… keeping my camera in monochrome forces me to find a story in a photo and not be sidetracked by color .. it also allows me to see light dynamics much better

Canon EF 135mm 2.0 prime lens.

This is another budget friendly lens that’s very tiny and can fit in your pocket..
I’m not much of a landscape guy. I’m more of a street photographer..  but this is an assortment of how versatile this little lens can be in any light conditions.. I have never struggled with this lens. It’s simply a fun lens for all kinds of photography.. 
I use the Canon EOS R body and straight lens.. no filters or flash.. I always work with what natural light is given to me.. I edit in Lightroom classic only.. I try to keep things as simple as possible

Canon RF 16mm 2.8 STM prime lens

We stop by a motocross track yesterday.. just a handful of riders practicing… so I grabbed a few shots in between rain… not a whole lot of action going on.. so grabbed just a handful of shots…
On rainy and overcast days I always edit black and white.
I was impressed how fast the budget 85mm could lock on the action shots.. I was expecting it to struggle some

I'm adding a bunch of random photos that were just for fun, and to show how versatile it can be..
I could have a great day with this lens and the 50mm 1.8 together.. they're both the same size. And they both fit in your pocket..
This is just my personal opinion on this 🤗

I get asked every now and then if I'm shooting HDR or Focus stacking or if I use filters.
The answer is no, I like to keep things as simple as possible... I personally hate tripods lol and HDR and Focus stacking would require that...
I've gotten rid of everything that makes me second guess myself when I'm shooting.. such as zoom lenses that make me second guess myself every shot.. zooming in, zooming out trying to frame things... the moment may have passed.. I shoot 100% prime lenses and this has solved that problem for me personally..
Personally I feel like the less I have to think about gear and even gear reviews.. the more I can just put my mind 100% into each shot.
If I have a camera body a cheap 50mm lens. I can have a blast shooting all day..
If I have to have a tripod to think about then filters.. and lots of lens choices.. Should I use this lens or that lens? So with that being said this or that lens is the best for this or that.. Just typing this makes my brain try to eat itself trying to find the logic lol
A camera, a choice of lenses for the day and a classic Lightroom to edit. I'll have a great day of shooting 🤗
This just works for me personally.. because I'm notorious for second guessing myself and having too many options can bring on anxiety lol
I believe less is better.. I believe the best camera to have is the one in your hand.. even if it's just a phone

Canon EOS R... EF 200mm 2.8 prime lens with adapter


This is my personal opinion only based on my experience as a photographer over the years. 
I have found there is 2 types of photographers.
One being a purist.. a purist to me is someone that does zero editing or very little.. they depend on getting colors and everything perfect in camera.. they have dialing white balance in perfectly.. as well as every setting possible to pop out of camera a very beautiful photo. With minor touch ups.. I personally have a lot of respect for purist.. they can answer any question on everything from gear specs and camera settings… 
I personally can not do that..
But I have had purist come after my work saying I’m a hack because I edit in Lightroom.. grass is not that color, skies are not that color ect 
But yet every purist I’ve ever met loves black and white photography 🤔 well in black and white .. grass and skies arnt that color as well 🤷🏻‍♂️
I love black and white photography myself. If I had my way that’s all I would do 🤗
Then you have the other kind of photographer that I put myself in .. that’s being more of an artist in editing.. if you asked me right now how many mega pixels does my camera have .. I would have to look it up in google .. because I know more about Lightroom specs then I do gear…
When I go shoot my camera is in RAW and my white balance is permanently locked at  5500k . 
RAW files are very flat and boring straight out of camera.. I see my camera purely as collect nice clean sharp photos.. as if I’m collecting a sketch on a canvas before I paint it.. all the Lightroom tricks in the world will not fix a poorly shot photo.. Lightroom for me enhances a flat boring RAW file ( my sketch ✍️) 
I get compliments on my work from people saying I hope to some day get my photography to your level .. as much as I appreciate the compliment.. there is a good chance you are already at my level of photography even if you shoot in auto mode.. it’s my knowledge of editing and bringing out my vision as a artist from a clean sketch to a printable product.. 
As much as I appreciate compliments on my work just like the next guy .. but let’s talk about the reality of things ..  you’re only seeing my successful shots posted.. no photographer is going to post their horrible shots.. purist or artist..even though I have been shooting for over 20 years.. I still come home with some failed shots just like any beginner in here.. mind you I do come home with a lot less failed shots then I use to..
But my point is if you only judge my work 100% on my successful shots .. your being fooled by a false environment of the internet.. you’re going to do nothing but discourage yourself.. because you see your failed shots mostly… rest assure I have many failed shots .. I could fill up more hard drives with failed shots that didn’t make the cut.. then I could with successful shots.. 
The failed shots have been my best lessons to do all I can to correct it and come home with nice clean sketches to do my art on.. 
If you strive to be a purist.. know your camera gear inside and out and make it work for you..
If you strive to be an artist.. learn how to get nice clean sketches and learn editing inside and out ..
I’ve included 2 photos of a statue.. both been edited.. one I feel is poorly edited and one improved… 
I hope this breaks the false environment the internet can bring . And causes beginners to be discouraged.. us pros still fail just like you .. we just don’t post our failures 🤗❤️

Edit photos? Or don’t edit photos?

For everyday carry setup no matter where I go.. a nifty fifty lens is very lightweight that I will take with me , even if I’m just running to the store..
I’ve made it habit to take my camera everywhere. Figure if the wife can be loyal to her purse daily .. I can be loyal to my camera lol 
I don’t typically take the 50mm off my camera unless I’m going to a planned shoot for the day .. then I change lens for that particular shoot..
These are very basic shots.. photographed through the car windshield while driving through Atlanta. 50mm lens. Makes long road trips a bit less boring.. and just fun to have different clean images to practice editing skills..
Even though I shoot 100% manually.. this can be accomplished in full auto mode as well.. it’s about getting photos just to practice editing skills … not every photo I take is planned to be my next great art piece.. I probably spent more time just grabbing random clean photos.. simply to practice editing and color grading..
I look at photography as 2 parts..
Taking good clean dynamics photos being one.
And editing skills being the 2nd..
I don’t typically wait to have a photo shoot. Then after the photo shoot practice editing.. I practice editing on random shots I grab..
Then apply things I’ve learned on photo shoots later.. 
This just how I choose to personally work.. it’s not the only way  to improve..

Canon EOS R Body .. 50mm 1.8 STM prime lens

When I first started, I had to learn the camera quickly because of my job.
Getting to grips with low light is one of the hardest forms of photography to do.. I figured if I could master that first.. then shooting in perfect light conditions would be pretty easy..
Low light was something I could do every night at home.. the TV on being the only light source.. I could take 100s of photos of any object within that light source.. or a simple lamp on a table in a dark corner.. or even just candlelight as the light source.. I did this for countless hours.. Plus it saved me from going out at night hoping to get some great shots.. and coming back with a bunch of blurry shots, or shots with a lot of noise..
Too many failed trips like that can make one give up.. and a long gap between shooting waiting for the next trip to try again would throw me off track and I would forget a lot of things..
So much low light at home. I could do it every night of the week.. Once I got to a point I could shoot sharp handheld shots with a candle being my only light source.. I ventured out to a small town after hours..
The light source in the store windows and objects that were staged by designers to make the products appealing to the public.. we also made for great practice.. and I could come home with fun still life images.. eventually I moved on to photographing people on the street in low light as well.. which brought a new challenge.. because even though I could hold my camera pretty steady for subjects that don't move.. people in public movement and can blur on you.. but the light source was still much better than a candle.. I could work with even faster shutter speeds..
some of these photos I've posted before.. I'm just posting what I mean by practice photos.. even though I've been doing this for a long time.. I'll still shoot cool lights or guarding windows while doing street photography.. it's actually become a habit for me lol
I'm by no means saying this is the only way to do things.. I'm just explaining what I did to help me improve.. by all means go with your heart and what works for you 🙏🏼

The struggle of learning the manual triangle between shutter F/stop and ISO

Yes, this is my gallery, I discovered SN recently and I want to share photography tips

Everyone has their own method of learning.. I'll just explain how I got over the hump quickly...
When I started asking questions wanting to learn manual mode... the answers would be: it's a balancing act learn your triangle.. slower shutter speed more light... but oops for slow blur... F stop brings more light too.. but oops half the person is out of focus... ISO brings more light too but oops now you have noise... Practice until you find the combination to that safe to break into lol
I come from a music teaching background.. If anyone has ever studied sheet music there is a formula for Every Girl Does right on the sheet music lines.. and the spaces spell out dude..
So to simplify things for me I took this approach...
Shutter speed freezes time.. I'm no longer thinking of it as a light source... I'm 100% deciding how fast that shutter needs to be to freeze time... to catch a bird, a basketball game, ect... plus faster shutter less movement blurry from shaky hands or someone running,
People will capture sharp water droplets with fast shutter... Hhmmm should work on anything I point to take sharp photos
So I personally look at F/Stop as my decoration setting.. How much blur I want in the background vs. how much detail.. now I'm decorating my image...
Now I have ISO to compensate for the difference in lost light... (oh but now you have too much noise) the fear of ISO noise comes from film days where you really had to be afraid of it.. I don't fear ISO at all
First ISO doesn't cause noise... lack of light causes noise... this fear of ISO noise would force me to go back and give up my fast shutter to capture action.. and go back to changing my decoration F/stop loved getting rid of the noise 🤦🏻 ♂️
I would rather keep my fast shutter and my decoration... leaving me only one problem to solve (noise) with today's software like Lightroom, the denoise button does a great job of solving this problem for me
When I shoot my brain now thinks of
Shutter (freeze action for sharpness)
F/Stop (my decor)
ISO (my required light)
It is very very rare that I am at ISO 100 even in broad daylight... I can be at ISO 1600 in broad daylight and see zero noise in the image.. due to an extremely fast shutter (freeze time) a high F/Stop for lots of background detail (decoration)
And the end results (tack sharp photo) 🤗
I am just stating what had worked well for me to overcome the unclear answers about a triangle balancing act.. not saying this is the only way or knocking anyone else's method 🤗
This added photo I took with a used $50 I think 20 year old canon rebel.. and a 50mm lens using this method.. so if I can do this with budget gear.. it can be done with better gear 🤗
I'm just sharing my thoughts.. not saying this is the only way at all 🙏🏼

Count on me, I'll share lots of photography tips

These are photos I took at home while teaching someone special about low light photography... A fantastic project to do during those horrible weather days. If you can master low light photography, shooting in perfect lighting conditions becomes a breeze.

She got the hang of it quickly! She started setting up different setups, experimenting with different light sources. All of these photos were taken on our coffee table, using poster boards with different fabric textures glued to them to create different backgrounds.

Sometimes she would use a simple lamp as a light source. Other times she would drag the coffee table close to a window to take advantage of the natural light. Then she started experimenting with a cheap LED light.

This project has really transformed the way she shoots, allowing her to adapt to any light conditions in different locations. Every time I look at these photos, I feel so proud of her effort and dedication to mastering low light photography. They were all taken handheld, without a tripod! It always brings a smile of pride to my face. 😊

Today, she has become an incredible photographer, regardless of the lighting conditions. I truly believe that this practice at home has accelerated her path to success.
