Hey! Thanks for the shoutout and the warm welcome. I heard about SN through a couple of Bitcoin maxis who gave me a hat and told me about it. I love to write and thought this might be an enjoyable outlet to write articles rather than social media posts, newsletters, blogs, etc. I am going to let the direction my work takes me evolve organically but I like to write about Bitcoin, orange-pilling, and dating in Bitcoin. I am an NBA fan too, so some basketball might find its way into the writing. 

Update! Ok, I probably spend too much time in this coffee shop—but the coffee is amazing, it's been around for 30 years, and it’s a real community spot in my neighborhood. So there I was, just working on my phone and drinking my Americano, when I noticed the same guy from before. He was with a friend this time, and we greeted each other from across the tables. He introduced me to the man with him.

He tells him how "really" into Bitcoin I am, loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. I just smiled, and we started chatting a bit about it casually.

Three people over 50 were at the table beside me, and one of them says, "Oh yeah, I heard Solana is really going to take off."

It cracked me up! I laughed and thought, "Damn... people really don't get it." And in that moment, I understood the pure exhaustion that so many Bitcoiners feel after years of trying to explain Bitcoin, only for people to still think it’s the same as an altcoin.

Oh, and don’t even get me started about the cab driver who told me about all the Bitcoin he lost. That’s a story for next time. Thanks for reading!

Bitcoin Word on the Street: Canadian Coffee Shop Edition Part 2


Update! Ok, I saw him again yesterday at the coffee shop and had a good convo. He was very intrigued by things I said the day before and had more thoughts on it and questions for me. He was open-minded but also annoyingly condescending in his tone in a like "it’s so cute how passionate you are about Bitcoin" kind of way.

He mentioned how fascinating it is that Bitcoin has this almost cult-like quality. He pointed out how people who are into Bitcoin are really into it. I agreed but reframed it as a sign of how much it resonates with people seeking alternatives to a flawed system, and how it’s about passion for freedom and self-sovereignty, not blind faith.

We ended up going back-and-forth again. I brought up some points I gathered after the first conversation and wanted to be more prepared like breaking down the whale argument by referencing Glassnode's charts on BTC supply distribution and how Bitcoin ownership has shifted from whales to a more distributed model. I came back to how the Canadian dollar’s "strength" isn’t as rosy as it seems. He kept coming back to the idea that we’re lucky to live in Canada, which I agreed with in some respects, but I also pointed out that while we can appreciate what’s good here, we have to acknowledge the detriment of the endless money printing machine.

I explained how not being able to choose where our money goes, like funding initiatives we don't want to support - is wearing people down, even if they don’t realize it. I talked about how the "work hard and get ahead" story just doesn’t hold anymore as the money increasingly loses value and how Canadians are feeling that malaise, even subconsciously.

When he asked if I thought Canadians are pessimistic, I said it’s less about pessimism and more about a growing awareness that the system is broken. I added that this realization is one of the reasons Bitcoin is pumping—more people are waking up to the flaws in traditional systems and looking for alternatives.

He actually asked me about El Salvador, which was a great opportunity to talk about Bitcoin’s practical applications in helping people escape dangerous situations, or in building financial independence in countries with broken economies. He actually found that more compelling than Bitcoin’s use case for Canadians.

The big thing I’m still not sure how to fully address is the idea that Bitcoin’s use case in a first-world country like Canada isn’t as urgent. I tried to weave in points about the enormous debt Canadians are under and the subtle but real sense of defeat many feel about the system, even if they can’t articulate it. I’ll keep refining that argument for next time because something tells me this isn’t the last time we’ll be talking about Bitcoin at the coffee shop.

Real conversation at the coffee shop down the street from me. Part two is coming today.

In a lively conversation at a local coffee shop, Bitcoin found its way into the spotlight, sparking a spirited debate between a regular patron and a newcomer curious about the cryptocurrency. The regular, a self-proclaimed skeptic, raised familiar critiques: "The problem with Bitcoin," he argued, "is that it’s mostly owned by whales and China. Plus, phantom transactions make it seem like trading activity is higher than it really is." He also described Bitcoin as too volatile to be a practical financial tool.

The discussion shifted when the newcomer admitted she didn’t fully understand Bitcoin. Stepping in, I highlighted its unique advantages: "Bitcoin has consistently shown value growth over time. It enables peer-to-peer transactions without the need for banks and allows holders to avoid inadvertently funding causes they don’t support—unlike traditional fiat currencies." I also emphasized the moral and ethical aspects of Bitcoin, explaining how it helps users avoid putting their money into wars or initiatives they don’t support. "With Bitcoin, you have more control over where your value goes," I added.

The regular wasn’t convinced, quickly pointing out that the Canadian dollar is a "top 4" global currency and suggesting that it only appears weak when compared to the U.S. dollar. "If you look closely," he added, "it’s not as bad as people think."

Caught off-guard, I responded by referencing the tangible economic impact many in our community are feeling. "Even if the Canadian dollar is stable in theory," I countered, "its depreciation is hitting real people hard. Families are struggling to keep up with rising costs, and wages aren’t catching up. It’s undeniable that this has real consequences for day-to-day living."

The conversation ended on a thought-provoking note, highlighting Bitcoin’s growing presence in everyday discussions as proof of its relevance in today’s financial landscape and its possibilities for the future. The coffee shop buzzed on, but the topic lingered—to be continued.
