Design

The best solution in my opinion is buy one, but if I really must build one, I should start with putting together a machine shop, since the pump will almost surely need to be made of metal. Instead of spending several money of thousands of dollars on machine tools and metals, I might probably need to take a course in drafting or CAD design. 

After a number of failed and/or unsatisfactory attempts at building a pump, I may come up with one that works. Since i am living in a Ethiopia where pumps are incredibly costly or else simple but inefficient, My best option is to see what all my neighbors are doing to solve their water supply needs. 

I can actually buy pumps for under 9600 Ethiopian Birr which is around 70 USD but if I have really restricted requirements, the price may be much higher. By the same token, building one  follows the same rules. I have a friend of the machine shop, as I also have a well requiring a medium duty deep well pump. For the 9600 ETB, I spent on pump, controllers, wiring, tubing and valves, I could NEVER have done built that myself. Yes, I can assembled that and installed it myself, but building it all is a huge work in my view

I think the other answers to a good job of looking at the specific pro’s and con’s. Instead I just want to emphasise the one big, overarching, all encompassing con. Whatever innovation we place on top of the blockchain we are still merely attempting to catch up with traditional database architecture in terms of speed.

Fundamentally a distributed network without overall which spans the internet will always be slower and use resources less efficiently than a centralised and tightly controlled network doing the same job.

Whatever so called innovations we place on top of it this will be the case. In the case of Lightning network my question would be - what constitutes this second layer? A centrally controlled database of some form? For this is the only way in which the basic blockchain idea can be sped up. Some form of ‘off chain’ storage. ‘Off chain’ which basically means in a normal database. Why, why, why? This is supposed to be a blockchain tech. There are supposed to be advantages to blockchain. Keep going down that road and we come back to the real question - why the hell are we using blockchains in the first place?

The answer to that is nobody really knows. There are currently zero good reasons to use a blockchain over a traditional centrally controlled database architecture. The very existence, the very fact there is a need for lighting network shows that the whole idea of blockchains are fatally flawed. It is a tacit admission of failure and defeat. In the end we will come full circle, back to where we started.

This is the con everyone should be thinking about.

And by the way, in terms of the Advancement of lightning technology,  it is important for companies to illustrate on the need so that people won't have a headache of transferring BTC to other wallets with MAX FEE.

I’ve been thinking about the revival of Agora-style Bitcoin marketplaces—truly peer-to-peer, censorship-resistant exchanges for goods and services.  

With Nostr gaining traction and Lightning improving small payments, it feels like we’re close to the tools needed to make these markets work without relying on centralized platforms.  

What projects are you watching in this space?  Do you think decentralized Bitcoin marketplaces will finally achieve mainstream adoption?  Or are legal risks and liquidity challenges still too big?

Federal Reserve launches FedNow Service for instant payments to empower banks and credit unions.

In an announcement Thursday morning, the Federal Reserve unveiled that its instant payment system, the FedNow® Service, has officially gone live. This tool aims to empower banks and credit unions of all sizes to facilitate instantaneous money transfers for their customers. The Federal Reserve claims that FedNow transactions can be executed 24/7, 365 days a year.

To start, 35 banks and credit unions, alongside the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service, are among those already equipped to handle payments through the FedNow Service. Furthermore, a lineup of 16 service providers are poised to offer payment processing support for banks and credit unions.

"The Federal Reserve built the FedNow Service to help make everyday payments over the coming years faster and more convenient," said Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. "Over time, as more banks choose to use this new tool, the benefits to individuals and businesses will include enabling a person to immediately receive a paycheck, or a company to instantly access funds when an invoice is paid."

When asked if the FedNow service is attempting to replace cash, and if it was a central bank digital currency (CBDC) or not, the Federal Reserve stated "No. The FedNow Service is not related to a digital currency. The FedNow Service is a payment service the Federal Reserve is making available for banks and credit unions to transfer funds for their customers. It is like other Federal Reserve payment services, such as Fedwire and FedACH. The FedNow Service is neither a form of currency nor a step toward eliminating any form of payment, including cash."
