**Old Happy:** I should save my love until I find the right person. 
**New Happy:** I should share my love with every person that I meet. 

Imagine having someone in your life who loves you for all that you are. This person accepts and embraces every part of you. They show you the best of you and encourage you to nurture it. They celebrate your wins, they sit with you in your challenges, and they remind you that you're never alone. 

Now, remember this: you can be this person for someone. That's how powerful your love is. This isn't something that has to be confined to a romantic relationship, either; you can share your love with all of the people in your life. Sometimes, we think that we have to save our love; in reality, we need to share it, for that's what helps us and the people around us to feel joyful. Real love is something you don't run out of. 

It's surprisingly simple to get started on sharing your love. ​As you can see from the community responses below, what makes people feel loved in this way is usually the little things. This is backed up by research. One 2020 study found that these small, everyday experiences of love are connected to higher well-being — the more moments of love received, the happier they were. 

This weekend, sit down with someone who matters to you and as, "What do you need right now?" 

Listen to what they say. Then, use your creativity, care, and compassion to fulfill that need. 

For example: 

- “I need a break.” — Give them the night off from parenting, surprise them with a trip to your favorite restaurant, or take on one of their regular responsibilities.

- "I need appreciation.” — Find five ways to compliment them over the next few days.

- “I need to connect.” — Ask them how they are feeling, go for a walk and talk, or do something new and fun together.

When you love someone for all that they are, you also help them to become all they can be.

Human beings, pattern-seekers and meaning-makers that we are, tend to make assumptions very easily. 

We see something and then extrapolate from it (without even noticing that we are doing so!) 

Here’s a way we can better care for one another: catch ourselves when we make assumptions about how someone else is doing, feeling, or experiencing life. 

Instead, shift to curiosity: ask questions, consider what you might not be seeing, and be open to learning from them.

Old Happy culture taught you that, if you can just find a way to be perfect, then everything will be okay. 

Then you'll be happy. 
Then you'll feel like you belong. 
Then you'll be able to make a difference in the world.

It doesn't work that way. In fact, it's the opposite: the sooner that you realize that you're acceptable _right now_, exactly as you are, the sooner you will be able to be happy, to discover your sense of belonging, and to make a positive impact on others.

Start saying to yourself, “I’m acceptable right now, exactly as I am.” Then watch what happens—how your self-acceptance helps you to grow.

_You need more._

This message runs through Old Happy culture, affecting us from a very early age. We’re told that more is the secret to happiness. 

Research shows, however, that the pursuit of more stuff doesn’t actually make us happy. 

First of all, we adapt very quickly to good things in our lives. This is called hedonic adaptation. No matter what you get, you tend to get used to it. 

Other studies have found that people who are more materialistic —which means they value stuff and money more highly — are more likely to be lonely, struggle with their relationships, and rate themselves as less satisfied with life. 

Notice what this desire for more feels like inside of you. Maybe it’s a sort of clenching in your stomach. It could be a racing heart that signifies your fear. It could be a sense of urgency that leaves no space to pause and ask if something more is actually necessary. 

When you feel that feeling, ask yourself, “What need am I trying to fill here?"

With that need in mind, you can look around to figure out how you can fulfill it. 

Many of our needs can be fulfilled by simply pausing to notice, appreciate, and enjoy the good that is already present in our lives. You have people to love you, things that nourish you, community to support you, agency to make different choices, and interests to inspire you. These things can fulfill you in a way that more and more cannot.

I know that you are pursuing a goal that matters to you. 

I know that it can be agonizingly slow. 

I know that you persist and yet somehow it still feels like you're not moving forward. 

I know that you sometimes feel confused and wonder if you're doing the right thing.

I know that it can sometimes feel so hard to keep going. I know you sometimes want to give up and throw in the towel, and do something that is a little bit easier instead.

Here's what I want you to know: you can do this.

Because I also know that you are brave — not everyone would take on this goal. I know that you are creative — you find inventive solutions to problems. I know that you are resilient — you get up after setbacks and learn from them. And above all else, I know that if you keep trying, one day you will wake up, and everything will be different.

**Old Happy:** I have to stay the way I am. 
**New Happy:** I can grow, evolve, and change.

Some people might judge you for changing. They might say that they don't understand you anymore, or that they don't know what happened to you, or that they want you to go back to the way it was. 

Know this: you deserve people in your life who love you as you change and grow. 

Because your growth is something to celebrate. The ways in which you have changed are a testament to how much you’ve learned. Your transformations show that you’ve navigated the challenging process of letting go, redefining yourself, and living as that self. Your new perspectives demonstrate that you were open to moving closer to the truth, even if it was uncomfortable. 

The next time that you feel any sort of judgment from those who want you to stay in one place, say to yourself: "I can keep transforming. In fact, that's exactly what I'm supposed to do."

I want you to expand your expectations. I don't want you to settle for anything less than you deserve — which is a life of well-being, joy, connection, and peace.

And once you realize this for yourself, you will also start to see: this is what everyone deserves. No one should ever have to settle for less. 

And once you realize that, it becomes quite obvious: we are the ones who get to turn this expectation into a reality. We are the ones who can create a world of well-being, joy, connection and peace — founded on the deep awareness that this is what we all deserve.

If you're anything like me, you wake up every day and think, "Alright, today's the day when I'm going to figure out how to get my life under control." 

And then, every day, life throws a few bumps (or many!) at you.

A lot of our pain comes from trying to control every single thing that happens in our lives. It's an impossible task we've set for ourselves: my day can only be a good one if these specific things happen, in the specific way that I want them to happen.

Here's a different approach: embrace the bumps. 

Reset your expectations: today will be, like most days, a bumpy one. And amidst those bumps, there is a lot of opportunity for joy, growth, adventure, and happiness. Life doesn't have to be smooth, planned, or 'figured out' in order to be enjoyable and meaningful.

Say to yourself: 

"Today will be bumpy. That doesn't mean I've done anything wrong. It's the nature of life. Today, I'm going to embrace my day, no matter what happens, and find joy in living it."

Here’s one reason why you might be feeling stuck: you’re trying to be perfect and grow at the same time.

That’s impossible. You can’t do both. Mistakes, setbacks, and detours are an inevitable part of the journey. In your desire to be both — pulled between who you want to become and your fear of what might happen if you do — you can’t take action at all. You end up feeling completely stuck.

Today, redefine what success looks like as you work towards your goals.

Success doesn’t mean _being perfect_ or _getting it right immediately_.

Success means _being brave enough to try_. Success means _persistence_. Success means _making mistakes and then learning from them._

Correct, avoidance goes well with procrastination. Here the goal is to focus on possibilities, one step at time.

**Old Happy:** I am not strong enough to face my fear. 
**New Happy:** I've faced my fear many times before; I can do it again.

Avoiding it is easier in the short-term, but creates pain in the long-term. Facing it is harder in the short-term, but creates ease in the long-term.

We all would prefer to avoid the upsetting or painful things in life. But in trying to protect ourselves through avoidance, we often end up paradoxically increasing our suffering. 

The next time this you're avoiding something that needs to be faced, try this: think about how facing it will help you to be the person you aspire to be.

For example:

- If you're avoiding setting a boundary, tell yourself: “I’m a person with self-respect, and this is a moment to demonstrate that.”

- If you're avoiding a difficult conversation with a loved one, tell yourself: “I’m a person who shows up to work on my relationships, even when it’s hard.”

- If you’re avoiding a chore or responsibility, tell yourself: “I’m a person who follows through on my commitments.”

This shift in focus — from the present pain to the future gain — can help you tap into your deep well of courage. Even when it seems scary, please remember: you _can_ face this thing.
