🥜 Nutshell v0.16.5, a Chaumian ecash wallet and mint for Bitcoin Lightning based on the Cashu protocol, is a maintenance release with various bug fixes for the mint and the wallet.

"Most notably, overpaid Lightning fees are now issued to the user at the next restart of the mint in cases where the mint has crashed or turned off while an outgoing Lightning payment was still pending."

I found this to be the most useful video on DeepSeek that I've seen so far.  I wanted to understand what the real innovation of DeepSeek was.
Some takeaways:
* DeepSeek claims to have trained a Llama-sized model for only $5 million. <-- To me, this is still a suspect claim.
* DeepSeek uses a Mixture of Experts and Distillation approach. These are essentially strategies for making the models smaller.
    * I'm not sure how much of an innovation this really is. both methods were already known
* DeepSeek has made some mathematical innovations that speed up some computations
* DeepSeek R1 is training Chain-of-Thought models using reinforcement learning.
    * Advantage here is that the thought-chains are not needed as part of the training data, only questions and answers. DeepSeek optimizes its chains-of-thought simply to maximize the rewards / minimize the punishments from the reinforcement learning. The model is rewarded for getting the right answer, with a small reward for explaining its chain of thought. This makes training more accessible for people without huge data centers & huge training datasets.
    * This seems to be one of the main innovations, because previously only OpenAI's o1 was working on chain-of-thought models. The claim is that DeepSeek makes training and inference of CoT models cheaper and more accessible.
I feel like I understand more why people are hyped about DeepSeek, but I'm not fully convinced I should believe in the hype.  There are dozens of videos out there showing DeepSeek's supposed capabilities, but the incentives of YouTubers is to overhype stuff.  They show all the cool things, but how many failed DeepSeek responses did they not show?  How much of the training cost is not being properly reported?
In any case, the fact that DeepSeek released their code as open source is a good sign.  It means that even if they're overhyped, people can quickly learn where the pros and cons are.
Is this bad for Nvidia?  I don't think so.  See Jevons Paradox.

To inject some data into the discussion around the credits, we have plans to include the following in analytics but I thought it would be fun to share the raw data since Jan 3 as a post already.
I named the last column sat standard, since it is the ratio of sats to credits on the items. It basically means, for every 100 sats you see on an item that was created after Jan 3, 57 are real sats and 43 are credits since we sum them in the feed (but you can see the breakdown if you click on ... > details).
I expect this number to go up over time as we make it easier to attach a wallet, wallets make it easier to get attached, and the lighting network itself improves.

As Bitcoin ( #BTC ) continues to take center stage in the crypto space, the leading cryptocurrency recently breached the $65,000 level, a scenario earlier in August this year.
This renewed momentum is bullish since BTC might be on its way to setting a new all-time high (ATH) at the $85,000 zone based on a bullish divergence, as acknowledged by a leading market analyst under the pseudonym Mikybull Crypto.

A bullish divergence occurs whenever bears throw in the towel, setting the stage for bulls to call the shots because the price has fallen to a new low, but this is not the case with the oscillator.
Given that Bitcoin continues to be the talk of the crypto town thanks to the uptrend, the apex coin recently surged past the 21-week exponential moving average (EMA), which was located at the $60,500 zone.
Has Bitcoin Entered the Parabolic Phase?
Market analyst Elja believes that #Bitcoin has already set foot into a parabolic era, which will be instrumental in enabling BTC to go north of $115,000.

Crypto trader Rekt Capital shared similar sentiments, stating that BTC was edging closer to entering the transitional phase.
He stated, “Bitcoin is on the cusp of exiting the ReAccumulation Phase (red) to transition into the next phase in the Bitcoin market cycle… the Parabolic Upside Phase (green).”

Based on these analyses, it seems it’s not a matter of if but when Bitcoin will witness its next leg up.
According to Santiment data, heightened shark and whale accumulation has been pivotal in triggering Bitcoin’s stable price. In the past six months, BTC worth a whopping $4.08 billion has been purchased.
