The patron saints of surgeons.

The twins were born in Aegea (now Ayas, in the Gulf of İskenderun, Cilicia, Asia Minor).  His father was a martyr during the persecution of Christians in the Diocletian era.  Cosme and Damião were doctors who cured the sick not only with their knowledge but through miracles provided by their prayers.  Their real names were Acta and Passio.  Her mother was called Theodata, and she is also venerated as a saint by the Orthodox.

 The twins practiced medicine in Aegea and therefore achieved a great reputation.  They did not accept any payment for their services and that is why they called anargyras (in ancient Greek: Ανάργυροι anargyroi - averse to money).

 In this way, they brought many new adherents to the Christian faith.  When Diocletian's persecution began, Mayor Lísias had Cosimo and Damião arrested and ordered them to recant.
They remained constant under torture and, according to legend, suffered no injuries from water, fire, air, not even on the cross, until they were decapitated by a sword.  His three brothers, Antimus, Leontius and Euprepius also died as martyrs with them.

The execution took place on September 27, probably between 287/303 AD.

 Later, a series of reports emerged about the twins linked in part to their relics.  The remains of the martyrs were buried in the city of Cyrus, in Syria;  Emperor Justinian I (527-565) sumptuously restored the city in his honor, after being cured of a dangerous illness through the intercession of Cosmas and Damian.  Justinian rebuilt and decorated the church of the martyrs in Constantinople, which became a famous place of pilgrimage.  In Rome, Pope Felix IV (526-530) built a church in his honor.

 Cosmas and Damião are considered the patrons of doctors and surgeons and are sometimes represented by medical emblems.

The Old English Martyrology tells the following story:

 When they cured a lady of a serious illness, she secretly brought Damião a small gift;  the texts say there were three eggs.  And then she pleaded in the name of God that If he accepted them, Damião kept them.  Cosimo was so sad because of this that he asked that when they died their bodies would not be buried together.  Then on the same night, the Lord appeared to Cosimo and said: "Why did you say that about the gift that Damião received? he did not receive it as payment, but because it was asked of him in my name."(...) When they were martyred, the men who received their bodies were undecided about where they should bury them separately because of what Cosimo had said, until a camel appeared and said in a human voice: "Do not separate the bodies of the saints, bury them together."

Miracle attributed to SS.  Cosmas and Damião: a sacristan had a gangrenous leg;  While he slept, the Saints amputated his sick leg and replaced it with that of a recently buried Ethiopian, healing him.

A text that tells the story of the day that Padre Pio showed a woman the child she had aborted.  The most curious thing is that, by God's design, the child would become a pope.

This is the story:

 "To a woman who went to his confessional, Padre Pio said: - Close your eyes and tell me what you see. The lady obeyed, closed her eyes and said: - I see a huge square with a lot of people. Among the people, I see a procession that moves solemnly.

I see many priests, bishops and cardinals in court: they all precede a pope who is taking the throne.  Yes, I precisely see a pope on the throne and a large crowd that acclaims this pope, very beautiful… But what does all this mean? Padre Pio replied: -
The child you killed in your womb with abortion, in God's design, should become this pope. The poor woman screamed and fainted next to the confessional."

 Although it was not possible to prove the authorship of the text, the story is of fundamental importance, as leads us to reflect on a common and cruel situation: the regret of many women who committed an abortion.

 Another point that the text brings to light: how many people were cruelly killed in the womb and could change the history of humanity and the Church?

Furthermore, this fact serves to remind us of Padre Pio's position, which was always vehemently against abortion.

 Padre Pio even denied absolution to a woman who had committed an abortion.  The case is in the book Padre Pio's Jack of All Trades, by the friar Franciscan Pellegrino Funicelli.  When asked about his rigor in the face of abortion, Padre Pio responded:

 "The day people lose their horror of abortion will be the most terrible day for humanity. Abortion is not just homicide, it is also suicide.

Shouldn’t we have the courage to express our faith in the face of those who commit two crimes in one act?”

 Yes, Padre Pio considered abortion suicide.  And he explained:

 "I would understand this suicide of the human race if, with the eye of reason, you saw the earth populated by old people and depopulated of children, burned like a desert.  If you reflected like this, you would understand the double gravity of abortion: the mutilation of the lives of the parents as well. To these parents, I will scatter the ashes of their destroyed fetuses, to show their responsibilities and to deny them the possibility of appealing to one's own ignorance.  An induced abortion cannot be taken with false considerations and false pity.  It would be abominable hypocrisy.  Those ashes need to be thrown in the faces of their murderous parents.  If I don't leave them feeling guilty, I I will feel involved in your own crimes.”

 To conclude, Padre Pio himself recognized his strictness regarding abortion: 

 "When I say words, perhaps a little strong, but fair and necessary to those who commit this crime, I am sure that I have obtained God's approval for my rigor."

Born in London on May 3, 1991, son of Andrea and Antonia Salzano, he was baptized on May 18 of the same year at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows.

From early childhood, Saint Carlo Acutis showed signs of holiness, always being a charitable, kind and loving child towards everyone.
 Very knowledgeable about computers, Carlo created a blog in which he cataloged the Eucharistic miracles that took place around the world, which was something extraordinary, given that the internet was not so accessible at the time.  The center of Carlo's spirituality was the Eucharist and he was also deeply in love with the Virgin Mary.  He learned from an early age to imitate the shepherd children of Fátima, always offering sacrifice for the sinners.  He was an extremely charitable young man, especially towards the homeless.

 In October 2006, he was diagnosed with leukemia, the disease was serious and aggressive, causing him to be hospitalized.  With his trust in God, he patiently accepted all suffering and, days before. After being hospitalized, Carlo Acutis offered all his suffering to God, for Pope Benedict XVI and for the Church.  On October 11, 2006, Carlo was brain dead and on October 12 he left for eternity, leaving his trail of holiness throughout the world.

Carlo Acutis was beatified on October 10, 2020 in Assisi, Italy, where his body is for veneration in the Sanctuary of Expoliation.

 Carlo Acutis teaches us three extremely important things: the first is that holiness is a calling for everyone, regardless of age.  The second, that it is possible to be “holy without ceasing to be young”, living your youth seeking God in prayer, the Eucharist and the rosary.  The third teaching is that he is a saint of our times, a young man very close to us, from our generation.  Therefore, inspired by In the life of this young man, let us seek to love God and walk the path of holiness.

 Carlo Acutis' family wanted to donate his organs before his death.  But the doctors didn't allow it because they said they were affected by leukemia.

“We were informed that Carlo's heart had stopped beating at 6:45 am on October 12, the day before the last apparition of Our Lady of Fátima.  For us, this coincidence was not accidental.  We lost our only son, an immense pain, but we were sustained by hope that he had not definitively disappeared from our lives, on the contrary, that he would be closer to us than before and that a better life awaited us", concluded Carlo Acutis' mother.

 After Carlo's death, Father Marcelo Tenório, who works in the Parish

São Sebastião in Campo Grande, began to hold the annual mass in honor of Our Lady of Aparecida, always displaying a piece of Carlo's clothing.

 During one of these celebrations, in 2010, a grandfather desperate with the diagnosis of his sick grandson took the child to the parish.

According to family reports, the boy was cured after touching Acutis's clothing.

 "The child, I remember well, was stunted and had problems with an annular pancreas. She didn't eat anything, didn't ingest any solids or liquids and was cured soon after", declared Father Marcelo.
