# Breez x Turnkey: Instant Bitcoin for Embedded Wallets

# **Send Dollars Anywhere, Straight From Bitcoin: Introducing Send USDT/USDC**

Some time in 2025, stablecoins’ transaction volume quietly passed Visa and Mastercard combined. [Around 33 trillion dollars settled on-chain](https://www.forbes.com/sites/boazsobrado/2026/03/05/stablecoin-volume-just-crossed-33-trillion-now-what/) last year, and the overwhelming majority of it was dollars, USDC and USDT moving across Ethereum, Solana, Tron, and a dozen other networks.

Bitcoin watched most of these dollar-denominated transactions move from the sidelines. That’s not for any failing of its own; it’s the largest asset in crypto and the soundest money in the room, but the dollars were somewhere else, on networks it could not reach. So if you were building an app where people held bitcoin, you could not easily let them send to someone who lives on dollars, like a freelancer who invoices in USDC on Base, a supplier who’s paid in USDT on Tron, or a relative who keeps savings in stablecoins.

For developers, that meant supporting separate bitcoin and stablecoin balances, just so their users could move dollars. But, finally, that’s changed.

## What It Does

Now, any builder can let their users send USDC or USDT straight from a bitcoin balance on practically any network the recipient already uses. Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Solana, Tron, and many more from a growing list of over 30 networks. The balance stays in bitcoin, until the moment you send, with no second network for the app or its users to manage.

If an app offers[ Stable Balance](https://medium.com/breez-technology/volatility-optional-introducing-stable-balance-for-the-breez-sdk-d53e932522a2), users can hold dollars instead and send from that just the same. Whether they hold bitcoin or dollars, it really doesn’t matter: the app lets people send dollars anywhere either way.

## How It Works

When a user enters the recipient’s address, the Breez SDK detects the address type, finds a route to deliver dollars there, and shows exactly what will arrive before the user confirms. The amount, the network, the fee — all of it visible up front.

Underneath, conversions route through our launch providers, [Flashnet](https://www.flashnet.xyz/) and[ Boltz](https://boltz.exchange/). The architecture is open, so more providers can plug in over time while the goal stays the same: the cheapest, fastest conversion without taking custody. And for the user, it’s instant and non-custodial. They see bitcoin go out and dollars arrive on the network they asked for.

A user with dollars in Cash App can instantly fund their bitcoin balance, and it converts instantly to USDT on any network they choose. It doesn’t require a stablecoin issued on Lightning: the dollars stay where they already live, and bitcoin reaches them where they are. Lightning is the[ common language](https://blog.breez.technology/lightning-is-the-common-language-of-the-bitcoin-economy-eb8515341c11) that makes bitcoin interoperable with everything.

## Why This Matters

A mom can send money to her kids who hold dollars on Tron. A freelancer who saves in bitcoin can pay collaborators who only take USDC. A neobank can offer bitcoin without limiting users’ ability to pay across other networks. Until now, serving any of them meant integrating additional blockchains.

Now it’s a few lines of code for developers. Apps can let users hold what they want, bitcoin or dollars, and pay anyone on any network, non-custodially, instantly, and across any border without asking permission.

## The Walls Keep Coming Down

The Breez SDK exists to put bitcoin in every app, and to make value move like information, instantly, globally, to anyone. # How I paid with bitcoin using my Meta glasses

A few days ago I paid a Lightning invoice without touching my phone. I looked at a QR code through my Meta glasses, the glasses read the invoice, and [Unify](https://testflight.apple.com/join/uBDSF6Pf) paid it over BOLT12. It's a proof of concept and still rough, but I think we're one of the first to ever try this on Bitcoin (or at least Lightning).

## The wallet

I built Unify a few months ago. It's a bitcoin app, Lightning-only wallet, built entirely on BOLT12, and it does the basic things every wallet needs(why BOLT12 and not the usual invoices is a separate post. I'll get to it).

The reason I could build it so fast is the [Breez SDK](http://breez.technology/sdk) [@Breez\_Tech](https://x.com/@Breez_Tech). You add it to a project, let AI handle a lot of the rest, and in a few days, you have a wallet that moves real money. That's what I was talking about with [@dannystagg](https://x.com/@dannystagg), a friend of mine at Breez.

## Viareggio

Danny and I had been chatting for a while, mostly about Meta glasses. We both use them, for slightly different things. We met in person for the first time at the Tuscany Lightning Summit in Viareggio.

We talked about Breez's [time2build](http://time2build.dev/) challenge. I told him I didn't think any of the projects were really new (that's my opinion, not his!). When I criticize something I try to say why, so I gave him an example of what I'd consider new: paying with Meta glasses. They're good hardware, and nobody is using them to pay.

He liked the idea.

## The missing piece

After the summit we kept sending each other the Meta AI SDK preview, saying we should try it. The problem is that the glasses need a companion app, and I was building one. So I added it to my todo list and started reading the SDK.

## What it does today

You open Unify and set up the glasses. They connect to the app, and the app shows the camera from the glasses. You look at a Lightning invoice, the glasses detect it on their own, and Unify pays it over BOLT12.

The hard part is the scan. The first version of reading the QR through the glasses is unreliable, and that makes anything more than "look and pay" difficult. That's what I'm working on now.

## What doesn't work yet

The flow is still tied to Meta. What I want is to say "Hey Meta, pay this invoice" and have the glasses take the picture, send it to the app, and let the app pay it. That isn't possible yet. It needs the glasses and the SDK to get better, and that will take some time.

[Bringin](https://bringin.app/) ([@bringinxyz](https://x.com/@bringinxyz)) is the latest app to add instant, non-custodial bitcoin with the [Breez SDK](https://breez.technology/sdk/).

The fast-growing European fintech offers everything you need from a Visa debit card to a personal vIBAN and SEPA Instant, all tied together with a non-custodial bitcoin balance and a single login. It's live in 28 countries across the EEA, with over $13 million (170+ BTC) moved through the app by Europeans treating it as their main account for everyday use.

If sending bitcoin costs more than a SEPA transfer or settles slower than a contactless tap, they’ll be briefly curious, drift, then return quietly to the old bank with a bitcoin balance left in cold storage.

For the latest Shoot the Breez, we sat down with [@matteopelleg](https://x.com/matteopelleg), CEO of [@cluborange](https://x.com/cluborange), the world's largest bitcoin-only social network, to talk about going non-custodial and the Bitcoin community he's building.

Club Orange started custodial out of necessity. Matteo had thousands of paying members who'd never made a Lightning transaction. Teaching them all to set up their own wallet wasn't practical, and it wasn't going to scale.

So he built a wallet inside the app.

Bitcoin hit $126,000 in October 2025. By February 2026, it was worth half that. Great if you’re hodling. *Not so great* if you’re trying to spend it today, you’re a merchant pricing a product this afternoon, or you’re trying to send money home to loved ones. Volatility has been one of the last big friction points between bitcoin and everyday money. It’s why people still reach for dollars and stablecoins when they need a balance that sits still.

# Introducing Stable Balance for the Breez SDK

In October 2025, bitcoin hit an all-time high of $126,000. By February, it had shed nearly half its value. None of that was bitcoin’s doing. Thank tariff wars, oil prices, and shifting monetary policy. The world moved, and bitcoin moved with it. That’s simply how decentralized price discovery in a free market works. But knowing why it happens doesn’t help when your balance is down 30%.

Of course, none of this matters much if you’re holding bitcoin for the long term. But if you’re trying to spend it today, or a merchant is trying to price a product this afternoon, that kind of movement is a big headache. It’s why many people still reach for dollars, euros, and stablecoins when they need their money to sit still.

Volatility is one of the biggest remaining barriers preventing bitcoin from being adopted as everyday money. It’s hard to spend or budget with a balance that’s constantly moving.

Stable Balance changes that.

## What It Does

Stable Balance is a new feature of the Breez SDK that lets users hold their balance in USD. When a user receives bitcoin, the SDK automatically converts the incoming sats to dollars. When they send bitcoin, it converts back to sats on the fly. The user sees a dollar balance that holds its value, and they can still send and receive bitcoin just like always.

No new wallets, no extra steps. Users can toggle Stable Balance on or off at will. Turn it on, and incoming sats convert to USD automatically. Turn it off, and the dollar balance converts back to bitcoin. That’s it. When developers enable the feature, conversions happen quietly in the background.

## How It Works

The dollar balance is backed by [USDB](https://brale.xyz/stablecoins/USDB), a stablecoin issued by [Brale](https://brale.xyz/stablecoins/USDB) and native to Spark.

When a conversion needs to happen, the SDK routes it through [Flashnet](https://www.flashnet.xyz/), a decentralized exchange built on Spark. The Breez SDK handles the rest, managing each conversion from start to finish so developers don’t have to. None of this complexity surfaces to the user. They just see a dollar balance that stays where it should.

As a bonus, holding USDB earns yield paid daily in bitcoin, with no lockups or extra steps required. But the core value proposition is as simple as can be: a user’s $50 balance is still worth $50 tomorrow.

## Why This Matters

A user sending remittances to loved ones cannot afford a 5% swing between deposit and withdrawal. A freelancer invoicing in bitcoin doesn’t want to worry about what the dollar equivalent will be when rent is due. A neobank integrating bitcoin wants to offer stability to users who think in their local currency.

While traditional banking and payment apps offer stable balances, your money remains stuck in that system. Frozen accounts, blocked payment pathways, and withdrawal limits are all structural trade-offs that shape any user experience built on top of them. Stable Balance in the Breez SDK combines the, well, stable balance of tradfi apps with the freedom to move value instantly, across any border, without depending on anyone in between.

Stable Balance also meets users where they are. It doesn’t ask anyone to change how they think about money. It gives them a dollar-denominated balance that rides on bitcoin’s rails, all while preserving the speed, cost structure, and non-custodial properties of the Breez SDK.

## Lightning Is Dead, Long Live Lightning ⚡️

Roy's latest article focuses on where Lightning has been and where it's going.

Lightning used to mean channels you managed, liquidity you balanced, and infrastructure you babysat. That version is dead. For as long as bitcoin wallets have existed, the seed phrase has been both a superpower and a liability. Those 12 or 24 words are the master key to your funds. Write them down, keep them safe, never lose them, never let anyone see them. Definitely do not [save them to a hard drive](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin_buried_in_Newport_landfill), toss the hard drive into the trash, and then spend millions trying to get them back out before giving up, sad and much poorer.

It’s stories like this that scare so many potential users away from self-custody. A sticky note in a drawer, a screenshot in iCloud, a forgotten notebook. There are so many simple ways to blow this one crucial step, but the consequences are permanent.

The rest of the tech industry has been moving away from passwords for years. The stakes with bitcoin are higher, but the logic is the same. It’s time Bitcoin caught up.

# **The Missing Piece: PRF**

Passkeys aren’t new. Apple, Google, and Microsoft jointly backed the standard in 2022, and the market has welcomed the move enthusiastically. According to the FIDO Alliance, [over a billion people](https://fidoalliance.org/biometric-update-state-of-passkeys-2025-passkeys-move-to-mainstream/) have activated at least one passkey, and as of May 2025, [69% of users](https://www.authsignal.com/blog/articles/passwordless-authentication-in-2025-the-year-passkeys-went-mainstream) have set one up. [48% of the top 100 websites](https://www.authsignal.com/blog/articles/passwordless-authentication-in-2025-the-year-passkeys-went-mainstream) now support them. They’re built into every modern phone and computer. The technology is proven. Bitcoin just hasn’t adopted it yet.

The missing piece was key derivation. Passkeys are great for authentication, but a bitcoin wallet needs to deterministically derive cryptographic keys, not just match a user with their account. Bitcoin presents a different problem, and until recently there was no standard way to solve it.

That’s what the PRF extension of WebAuthn solves, and it’s the key ingredient in Passkey Login. PRF is a newer capability, part of the [WebAuthn Level 3 spec](https://www.w3.org/TR/webauthn-3/), that lets your passkey produce a deterministic cryptographic output for any given input. Same passkey, same input, same output. Always. The passkey never leaves your device’s secure enclave.

PRF is what separates passkeys-for-authentication from passkeys-for-key-derivation. Regular passkeys can verify who you are. PRF lets them generate secrets deterministically.

PRF support is still rolling out unevenly across various platforms. [Android](https://support.google.com/android/answer/14124480?hl=en) with Google Password Manager has the most complete support. [Apple](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/use-passkeys-to-sign-in-to-websites-and-apps-iphf538ea8d0/ios) added PRF in iOS 18 and macOS 15 for iCloud Keychain. Windows Hello doesn’t support PRF at all yet, so only external hardware keys like [YubiKeys](https://www.yubico.com/) work on Windows. Firefox support is also incomplete. It works well on Android and increasingly on Apple platforms, but not everywhere.

Logging in to the Breez SDK with a passkey requires PRF, so coverage today maps to where PRF works. As adoption grows (and it’s growing fast!), so does the utility.

The practical result: any device with a PRF-capable passkey can reconstruct your wallet keys from scratch and on demand.

# **How It Works**

### **Your Passkey Derives Your Keys**

When you set up Passkey Login, the app uses your passkey to compute a PRF output. That output becomes the root key for your wallet. From there, standard key derivation produces keys for the Breez SDK.

No randomness is stored. No backup is created. The passkey is the key generator, and it only works when you authenticate. The protocol also supports multiple wallets, each derived from a different label.

### **Nostr Keeps Track of Your Labels**

Here’s where Nostr comes in, but not as a core security primitive. Instead, Nostr is a practical solution to a real problem: if your keys are derived from labels, how do you remember which labels you used when restoring on a new device?

The answer is to publish them. Under the hood, the app seamlessly creates a Nostr identity derived from the same PRF and uses it to post each label as a plain Nostr event. The user never sees or manages this identity. When you restore, the app reconstructs that same Nostr identity, queries the relays, retrieves the list of labels, and re-derives the keys on the spot.

No cloud backup. No iCloud. No Google Drive. No server. Just your passkey and a few public Nostr messages.

# **Trust and Tradeoffs**

The app stores nothing. Keys are derived fresh on every use, with no local secrets and no encrypted backup file. There is a soft dependency on Nostr relays for label lookup, though Breez handles all of this out of the box.

The security is as strong as your passkey. If your passkey is cloud-synced, as most platform passkeys are, a compromised cloud account means compromised keys. And if you lose access to your passkey entirely, you lose access to your funds.

Passkeys also aren’t fully interoperable across platforms yet. That’s why the Breez SDK lets you export the mnemonic for any of your wallets. If you ever need to move to a platform or wallet that doesn’t support passkeys, you have a standard seed phrase to fall back on.

# **Why This Matters**

The seed phrase has been a barrier to self-custody since day one. It’s what scares normies away from keeping their own bitcoin, and it’s a legitimate reason why people accept the counterparty risk of exchanges and custodial apps.

Passkey Login doesn’t eliminate the tradeoffs of self-custody, but it reframes them around something people already understand and use, namely the same biometric authentication that protects their banking app and their password manager. For most users, that’s a much more intuitive security model than a piece of paper in a drawer.

For developers building on the Breez SDK, it means onboarding without the “write down these 12 words before you continue” speed bump, while still giving users full control over their keys.

# **The Future of Bitcoin UX Is Here**

The full technical specification for Passkey Login is [public](https://github.com/breez/passkey-login/blob/main/spec.md), and our reference app [Glow](https://glow-app.co/) is already running it, and it’s now available for all the Breez SDK devs to use.

The seed phrase has been one of the biggest UX barriers to bitcoin adoption, but we finally have the tools to overcome it. Passkey Login builds on authentication infrastructure that billions of people already use every day, and it makes using bitcoin feel as natural as unlocking your phone. That’s what drives the Breez SDK: pushing the boundaries of what’s possible until yesterday’s Bitcoin dreams become today’s reality.
