Hey thanks for the tag. Unfortunately no. I don't know how Square US handles the conversion on the back end, but they either need an in-house liquidity desk or exchange partner to offer real-time fiat payout of bitcoin payments. Obtaining the license to engage in that in Japan would take quite a while; partnering with a Japanese exchange would likely be quicker but still a heavy lift. Many compliance hoops to jump through.
So it would take someone senior at Square Japan who's also a bitcoiner and seriously committed to seeing this happen, and I'm not sure such a person exists, nor how closely Square Japan follows what Square US does. Based on my company's usage of Square, they seem fairly separate.
That said, I'd absolutely love to see this happen, so if anyone at Square happens to be reading this, not that I have much to offer but I'm happy to shoot the shit about what this would entail, and make introductions if I can. I'll also hit up my normie friends who work at Square Japan and see what the vibe is.
In college I couchsurfed in Europe, but never in Japan. People I know who did all had great experiences though.
Well, this is a Japanese crypto news site, not mainstream.
There’s a semi-regular bitcoin flea market called Lightning Marché!
Pretty simple for me.
“Is it better for people to use custodial bitcoin than fiat?” Yes.
“Are people more likely to move from custodial bitcoin to non-custodial bitcoin or from fiat to non-custodial bitcoin?” The former.
Learning and behavioral change are incremental processes.
The revolution needs the cover of billions of people who may not use bitcoin in the ideal way but use it in some way and feel favorable towards it.
