It helped though. The fact that it's still here is a testament to this: bitcoin aligned incentives in a way that has at least allowed it to become as big as it is.
Your broader point I sympathize with. Bitcoin has value because people want it.

Are you sure? I seen respected bitcoin people meltdown over this OP_Return deal? You still got the CTV folks wanting their OP code turned on in the code base.
I think many land mines are afoot and it will only get worse as more fiat comes into the network
