Yesterday was an Chevy Chase style adventure.

• My wife's dad died
• We booked her a flight to her family
• She believes the flight is at 8p
• I drop her off at the airport at 6p
• Her brother calls and says she hasn't showed up 30m after her flight landed
• We realize her flight was at 6p, she must've missed it, and didn't contact anyone
• Her phone is off, I can't contact her
• I check our shared credit card and see a charge from another airline
• she booked another flight, but we don't know which
• I call the original airline and the wait time I'm quoted is "549 minutes"
• I call the new airline and the wait time I'm quoted is "59 minutes"
• I decide to go to the airport and find flesh and blood humans I can talk to
• I go to departures and there's no one there, except one guy from neither relevant airline, I ask him what to do
• he tells me I can go to baggage claim and find an airline representative from the airline and they might have access to flight info
• the guy there tells me with a wink and a nod that he can't tell me if anyone is on a flight but if they were on a flight to that destination they'd be on one landing right now with a connection to the destination
• we figured it out, she'll arrive at the destination in a few hours
• I get ahold of her before her connection and she missed the connection too
• She now books a third flight that departs in 6 hours
• Finally this morning she arrives

Happiness Journal 13/6/25

“How to Train Your Dragon” would never have fallen on my radar since I stereotyped it to be a show for kids. However, since I felt compelled to make emotional bank deposits with my son, I decided to take him to watch it on the spur of the moment.

What a fun ride. John Powell’s emotion-stirring musical scores did much to engage me and keep me glued to the story arc. I saw myself in Hiccup; he used sui generis ways to tame different dragons during his dragon training course. I would like to think that people see me as a creative teacher. He showcased his indefatigable nature as he tried ways and means to train a Night Fury dragon called Toothless. He carried an ineffable charm with him that made me want to root for him.

I also enjoyed the scenes when Hiccup and his course mates worked together to subdue and conquer the red death, illustrating the axiom that each of us has the ability to contribute to something greater than ourselves when we are positioned at the right place to harness our strengths, even when we are struggling individually.

A movie that is values galore!

Most importantly, my son was captivated throughout the entire duration, never asking for a loo break. Parenting is tiresome drudgery most of the time, so I’m happy to stumble upon a pastime that both of us can enjoy together. I look forward to sniffing his hair - which contain traces of my DNA - as he cuddles against me during future movie outings.

You can’t just sit and wait for inspiration to show up. You need to help make it manifest itself. You need inputs to generate the outputs, and you need to be open, vulnerable and courageous to let them out.
