I’ve read that the trippy effects during long fasts might come from high ketones, dopamine shifts, and way less sensory input. Low glucose kinda forces the brain into this weird focused mode like mild sensory deprivation but internal, tapping into some underused brain state that kicks in when the body goes deep into survival mode.

People from many cultures have engaged in ritual practices to reach heightened states. From ecstatic dancing to speaking in tongues to consuming psychedelics, there is a correlation between ritual practice and psychedelic states. We also know that people have fasted ritually in many cultures. Some do daily fasts, but sometimes people have done longer fasts. I wonder if the altered state one reaches through fasting is connected to that.
