Scrollable short format videos are eating the world.
They are currently the speaker to the world. Able to shape minds and shift societies.
But they are a bit broken (or maybe working precisely as intended):
  • No ad-free option.
  • It's easy to fall into dumbscrolling.
  • Algorithms optimized to maximize time spent, not value received by the user.
Basically the same illnesses of social media that SN strives to fix by tweaking the incentives.
Do you think there's room for the SN equivalent of TikTok/Reels/Shorts?
What would that look like?
We can already embed short videos into posts.

Hmm it's not the same. The scrolling part and an adaptive algorithm are key.
It should look almost exactly like TikTok. Just with different incentives and content sources.

That’s what I was wondering.
It would need to be a feed of embedded videos, rather than post titles.
An algorithm like ours could be applied to something like that, but I don’t know if it would create a good product.

Well you could preset random posts from territories and measure how long people linger on them or if they click / share / zap and use that as the inputs. I think I saw they open sourced the tik to algorithm

I think the idea was that you could potentially replace those attention/addiction metrics with something like our zapping system. It seems plausible.

ah yeah that makes sense perhaps then it would be showing you things from territories you often zap from or something and same with downzap. I think you probably still want some of the attention metrics. I was trying to think of what you would be optimizing for. Is it trying to get you to zap more overall or the value of the zap? or is it trying to maximize the zaps posts get? Those would lead to very different types of behaviors it optimizes for

Yes! I was actually thinking about this today. You could have the like regular scrolling up and down then side swipe for the "super like" action that zaps the creator of the content. I was thinking you could have some new nostr event to download a short form video from another social media website (to kinda parasite off of the existing ones) think nitter or xcancel. So imagine you could post native but you could also repost from tiktok or instagram reels. The yt-dlp would download the video and you could grab the metadata from https://oembed.com/ you could make wallets for the instagram and tiktok users to collect the zaps so they would want to claim them

Personally, I'm not a fan. I turn off shorts wherever I can.
