While my recent post in ~econ with less number of zaps and seemingly from the same guys have made it to the middle of front page hot
But another post in ~Stacker_sports, #1018495, again seemingly zapped by two same guys, is not even close to the front page hot of SN.
Not only many of these posts now not make it to the front page but they also don't make it in the top top for the day.
And it's not just one case, I see many times that posts from other territories being zapped by one or two Stackers in only 2 figures make it to the front page very fast. So weird!
I'm not demanding anything but sometimes it feels to me that some posts, especially the sports news, from ~Stacker_Sports can be an an interest for most Stackers.

Each territory has it's own trust graph. A zapper may be highly trusted in ~econ but not ~Stacker_Sports.
The whole point of territories is that if you have an interest, you can go to that territory and satisfy the interest regardless of what's on the homepage.
reply
Alright seems fair enough to say that ~Stacker_Sports has a pretty low trust graph. And @grayruby and @Undisciplined are highly trusted in ~econ but not in ~Stacker_Sports (as I was pointing to them in my post.)
Ok. How do we earn or lose this trust for stackers?
The whole point of territories is that if you have an interest....
Is it proportional to the ethics of equality? I mean each territory pays the same fees, so why not just give equal representation to each territory on the front page?

There's been many discussions about trust and how it works and you've been part of those discussions.
This is a good starting point if you're interested in learning the details: #916035

Actually my math is really weak. I used to think value on top Stackers was trust score. Is it it apt to say that zapping good (means top?) content increases your trust score in the specific territory? Also, if I zap first and then higher trust ranked stackers zap the same increases it?
Maybe however I may part in these trust related discussions for days, I won't understand. Partly because I'm not a technical guy and partly maybe I'm not native English speaking. So asking as a normal use - kindly give equal representation to all territories on the front page.
reply
I remember you talking about territory specific trust, but I didn't realize that had rolled out already.
So, the issue is that within ~Stacker_Sports, we have basically zero trust with the majority of stackers, since they don't interact with these posts, and then when everything gets aggregated up sitewide the posts don't rank very well?
reply
I should do a deep dive into how hot rankings are calculated. The one I did on the trust graph only covered how user-trust inside territories are calculated, but didn't cover the aggregation into hot rankings.
reply
I'd appreciate that. I haven't given it nearly as much thought yet as the rest of the SN system.

I remembered that release, but forgot that the trust graphs were part of the change or I misunderstood it at the time.

He did, but we we've been planning it for long before that.
I may trust a barista to make me coffee, but I do not trust them to give me heart surgery. Meaning trust is usually scoped to certain areas.

I think my point is going on other direction. I just wanted to know or wanted to report that I personally don't like that ~Stacker_Sports is not getting equal representation on the front page.

Noted. Unfortunately or fortunately, you nor anyone else gets to decide what everyone else should be interested in unilaterally.
If anyone wants to see more ~Stacker_Sports stuff, they can go to the territory.
reply
Unfortunately or fortunately, you nor anyone else gets to decide what everyone else should be interested in unilaterally.
Who decides then? I bet you zap any post and it sure going to the front page, isn't it so? I mean Stackers decide it, mostly high trust Stackers??
reply
I think we need to pursue @k00b to taking more and more interest in Sports so he becomes one of us and ~Stacker_Sports posts will be up on SN front page, like this one is now! What you say @grayruby and @Undisciplined?
reply
It doesn't have to be @k00b specifically, but that's the right idea.
Look at the territory analytics. ~Stacker_Sports is growing nicely, even with Stacker News seeing less activity.
If we keep on this path, then more of our stuff will surface on the main site.
reply
@k00b was just symbolic there you know.
I've no doubt about the success of ~Stacker_Sports because it's got interest of masses. Unfortunately high trust zappers don't like sports maybe. And I doubt more of our stuff will ever surface on the front page if more Stackers (especially with high trust) don't zap our posts.
You can see our posts get more comments but don't get more zappers. I don't know why those who love sports have a problem to just zap 10 sats, if not more?
reply
Wait until NFL games start back up. That's our busy season. I think we'll see a trust uptick.
For the past few months, basically the whole time there's been territory specific trust, most Americans have been checked out of sports, so we haven't had an opportunity to build our trust scores.
reply
I also hope we soon pick up, it's just sometimes depressing not to see more zaps even on a good sports news post. I think we should challenge non-sporty butterballs of SN for a duel on something, maybe a comment/post competition, maybe then they lose some morbidity.

Best strategy is just to try to get people to sub to the territory then they will see the posts regardless if they make the top lists or not.
reply
Best but not very easy considering SN don't have such a UI which persuades stackers to sub a territory like most othe platforms.
Before they made changes the hot page used to be a personalised one where you mostly got to see the similar content that you generally zap or engage with. Now it's like most of the content most of times that is not my interest on the front page which means I have to search for te content that I like. And it also makes hot and top page look alike.
To me the hot page (front page) of SN looks like that it's mostly imposed upon me. It may be the best content but best is also subjective.

This is too much hatred!!
On top of the day....
I don't understand how this makes SN better??

It is quite funny that it is below a few posts that have zero sats and zero comments.
I honestly don't care because Stacker Sports has a great community of stackers that are very active and engaged. Sports isn't for everyone and it makes sense stackers more broadly prefer posts about bitcoin, econ, tech etc.
I don't want to get into another tiff with @k00b about the trust scores. It simply is what it is. We just need to get people to sub.
reply
Maybe you are right. Maybe I just overthought about it. My intention was just to say that I liked the personalised front page but I forgot I might recieve the whip for saying what's righteous.
Anyways, I'll try to stay away from saying things about SN.

I do think you have a point. I just think it is a difficult problem to have an algorithmic trust system that is perfect. Overall it is pretty good. We know you have a couple people or at least one that likes to downzap your content as well. Maybe sports gets downzapped more in general.
reply
Thanks.
We know you have a couple people.....
Hmmm, maybe more! I don't mind it now though. In fact If they are reading it, I dare them to downzap everything from me if they can. I'll gladly accept their hatred (and sats too).
