Hey everyone 👋,
I’ve been posting and learning a lot here on Stacker News (especially in ~bitcoin_beginners), and I noticed something I wanted to understand better.
Some of my posts show they earned sats — for example, one post might say “Earned: 500 sats”, but when I check my SN wallet, I only see part of that amount added.
At first, I thought something was wrong. But now I’m learning that the sats on a post are the total earnings, not what I personally receive.
From what I understand:
A portion goes to me (the author)
Some goes to the territory owner
Some may go to the user who stacked me
And a small amount goes to Stacker News itself to help the platform stay alive
So the amount shown on the post is the total, but my wallet shows only my share after the split.
I’m sharing this in case other beginners are also confused. Have I understood this correctly? And is there a way to see the exact split for each post?
Thanks to anyone who can confirm or correct this — I’m really enjoying learning with this community ⚡

There is a 30% sybil fee. So if your post gets 100 sats it will show 100 but you will only receive 70. Of the 30 sats, 21 will go to the territory founder whose territory you posted in. The rest go to the rewards pool, some of which will be designated as referral rewards.

Thanks so much @grayruby — this really clears things up! 🙌 I was wondering why the sats in my wallet didn’t match the post totals. Now I understand that the 30% sybil fee goes toward territory founders and the rewards pool, which actually helps support the whole SN system.
Appreciate you taking the time to explain it so clearly ⚡ This kind of info is gold for beginners like me!

Yes — taxes can definitely complicate things with Bitcoin, depending on where you live. It’s something more people need to understand as adoption grows. Thanks for bringing it up!

Useful place to start are the FAQs together with some nice guides #252695 and #392551 (consider some things might have changed since)
To learn more about sybil fees, I highly recommend this #730254

Yes, 30% of any zaps you receive are split between rewards and the territory founder.
