Trump turns a tech turf war into a tariff-laced foreign policy doctrine aimed at defending American speech abroad.
US President Donald Trump has launched a fierce rebuke of Brazil’s moves to silence American-run social media platforms, particularly Rumble and X.
In his letter dated July 9, 2025, addressed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Trump ties new US trade measures directly to Brazilian censorship.
He calls attention to “SECRET and UNLAWFUL Censorship Orders to U.S. Social Media platforms,” pointing out that Brazil’s Supreme Court has been “threatening them with Millions of Dollars in Fines and Eviction from the Brazilian Social Media market.”
Apparently Brazilian censorship is somehow a domestic emergency in America.

Brazil is getting real close to becoming another Venezuela. This 50% tariff is a slap in Lula's face and feels like a move to bring Bolsonaro back.
