“Superman” is riddled with nagging issues that include an overstuffed story, underdeveloped characters, head-scratching plot contrivances, and some needless liberties with the lore that fail to have the impact intended. Even worse, at times the movie feels as if it’s made for fans of James Gunn rather than fans of Superman. From the overly jokey tone to cameos featuring several of his buddies, you can often see Gunn more focused on putting his stamp on the property than telling a great Superman story. https://keithandthemovies.com/2025/07/11/review-superman-2025/
Do the public sentiments care about I'll mouths for the most loved superhero in America whose motto is “truth, justice and the American way”? Absolutely not:
“Superman,” starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, flew to $122 million in its first weekend in North America making it the third highest grossing so far for 2025. Combined with global box office, the movie has already bagged $217 million.
And who says you just have to pass on a verdict, which is unnecessary for Superman. The general ratings are on the higher side.
Seems like Superman this time is not gonna get acclaims by the critics, however public sentiments and box-office are all singing the tunes of James Gunn's "Corny" Superman. At the least I found out one review that attempts to praise Superman for some newly added attributes to the character because of Gunn's genius.
The two central, definitive attributes to any Superman story are selflessness and resolve. He must always: 1. Put the needs of others before those of himself and 2. Refuse to give up. If either of those factors are missing, our minds rebel — it's simply not Superman. But having now seen Gunn's Superman, I'm prepared to add a third essential attribute to the idiomatic fuel mixture that makes Superman Superman, which this film illustrates with a bracing clarity and humor:
Is he corny because he's an immigrant? If you believe it the political messaging is strong. Of course it's not all what it got but it's too strong. Even James Gunn has a message for those who consider some of the messages in the movie to be "offensive"
"Screw them," the director told The Times "Superman is the story of America," he also said, in the sense that it follows "an immigrant that came from other places and populated the country" Source
I think it's too early to say the Movie's Politics is playing any role in its Success. There are still many people who'd watch their Big Blue Boy Scout for one inherent weakness that is his goodness.
If that's not all:
This Superman stands out as a film where the Man of Steel clearly articulates his place, principles, values, and beliefs, allowing audiences to rediscover who he is and why he embodies hope and heroism. Through powerful moments of dialogue and action, the movie reaffirms Superman’s commitment to truth, justice, and protecting humanity, making his character both timeless and relevant for today’s viewers. — by a very early immigrant to America. He immigrated in 1938 alongwith the Superman.
And here's one more from someone who'd never wish to be an immigrant in America, but he still loves America's greatest Superhero
A Resounding Triumph: Superman (2025) is a Modern Masterpiece! Wow. Just… wow. James Gunn's Superman (2025) isn't just a superhero movie; it's a profound, exhilarating, and genuinely refreshing take on one of the most iconic characters in pop culture history. This film absolutely soars, reminding us all what it truly means to be a hero, embodying that timeless mantra: "With great power comes great responsibility."
What else?
Superman is an excellent movie — worth a watch in the theatre.
