My kid once had to write an essay for why she wanted to attend a highly selective science academy. I told her to just write, "I like XKCD." Of course, she didn't do that (even though she does like xkcd), and she didn't get in either haha.
Somehow, I doubt she would have gotten if had she followed my advice either

I don't blame my students. I actually have great fondness for them. But the truth is most of them wouldn't get this. And it does make me sad that it isn't more common to find the type of students that would.

Yeah, I learnt to appreciate my colleagues' and students' strengths rather than lament their weaknesses...
They are all products of their respective education system, and I can observe wide variability depending on where they are from (Korea, China, India, Europe, etc).
