The impetus that catalysed this post:
- The founder of Toyota is Kiichiro Toyoda, so why is the brand named Toyota instead? Apparently, when Toyoda トヨダ is written in katakana, the character comprises 10 strokes. However, when Toyota トヨタ is written in katakana, it consists of 8 strokes. Now, in Japanese culture, 8 is considered an auspicious number because the characterハ broadens at the bottom, thus symbolising prosperity and growth.
I think it’s interesting how people’s decisions can be guided by numbers. Aside from how the Chinese and Japanese find the number 8 auspicious (a number that is taboo in German culture incidentally), some buildings in America don’t have the 13th floor.
