This is a great question. I got a older model pixel last time I got a phone, and I'm regretting it now because how quickly it's nearing end of security maintainance. I know 7a's aren't super old, but it may not be worth buying something down the road of obsolescence.

I'd say 8a or 9a due to them having bumped the security updates from 5 to 7 years of support (ending in 2030-2031)

If you don't keep phones that long and you get a great deal on 7a, that can work too.

I like my 8 and heard the 9 has more annoying AI stuff, but that's irrelevant if you use GrapheneOS

I'd add that another difference is the 7a has Tensor G2, while 8a has G3 and 9a has G4, so it also depends on your needs.

I'd narrow it to 8a vs 9a and then just compare cameras, RAM (same iirc), battery and whatever is most important to you.

I've not been shopping for pixels so I can't say much about the 9 series, but at least that narrows it down.

If I cared about cameras: I would check whether the lower megapixels on the 9a that's supposedly still better than 8a's due to AI enhancements and software tricks still applies on a googled phone.

Since I care about security and use GrapheneOS: I would personally see if there are any big differences between the Tensor G3 and G4 chips in terms of hardware and security features they enable.

I'm lined up for a 9a, but if the price difference with an 8a would be huge (it's not for me right now) then I'd do that.

Pixel 8 and up has MTE, so, barring bugs, that's better than what Pixel 7 offers.

One of my gigs actually pays up (been waiting for forever on multiple payments now), or
My current 6a breaks further than it is already broken

Its probably spam but the only phone I can recommend for now is iPhone 13 mini.

Couldn't pick any of those over 6' choices

Personally can't go anywhere over this size, and I can't really get it why we aren't getting smaller phones anymore
