Howdy frens!🤠
How’s it going in your corner of the world? I’m keeping up with my movie-watching routine (as always), but you might ask—what have I actually been watching lately? Well, let me share my recent movie adventures with you!
❄️ A few weeks back, my husband and I watched The Thing. It had been ages since I’d seen it, and when he mentioned he’d never watched it, there was no question—we had to do it. Watching it again was like stepping right into memory lane, reminding me of being a teenager and thinking: “This is so yucky, so cool!” There’s just something about that movie that stays with you. You can scream all you want at MacReady and the others, but you know it won’t change a thing—the Thing is still a real menace. But somehow, that’s comforting. Simpler times, I guess—back when yelling at the screen was my only worry. It even inspired me to do an ink drawing of The Thing and (another one with my kiddos)!
🚎 But before that, we watched Paterson by Jim Jarmusch. He’s behind some of those movies that make you think, laugh, and feel like you’ve slipped into another dimension right inside your own life. I think I’m drawn to stories that celebrate the mundane, but with a strange little twist. Paterson really leans into that—the daily routines, the small details that make life special. Nothing fancy, but it made me appreciate the magic in everyday moments, even if it was a bit slow-paced at times.
🧟‍♂️ We also watched 28 Years Later … sigh. I have to say, I was disappointed. After waiting so long for a new instalment, it just felt like another generic zombie flick. I really wanted more—more about what happened, how the zombies evolved, how the world is holding up. Instead, I was left with more questions than answers. Maybe they’re saving everything for the next one, but honestly, I wish they’d given us a bit more to go on.
🦸‍♀️ And, I was pleasantly surprised by Fantastic Four: First Steps! It was fun, to the point, and very self-aware. Sometimes, you just want a summer movie that knows it’s there to help you unwind. It’s a great choice for an easy Sunday afternoon.
So that’s my recent lineup, frens. Sometimes I wish I watched more wild or mind-blowing movies, but maybe just a little escape or a hint of magic in the ordinary is all we really need day to day. Now it’s your turn!
What movies have you watched lately? Any recommendations for something that’ll make me feel out of this world (in a good way)?
đź’“ Let me know, and godspeed!
The Thing, is, imho, the best movie of all time. But if you haven't seen the other two films in Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy," (which is a thematic trilogy, not one connected by plot or characters), I highly recommend them: Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness are also both fantastic.

I (ashamedly) only just recently read the short story The Thing is based on, Who Goes There? Made me appreciate Carpenter's work even more.

Another one to the list! đź“–

It holds up pretty well for a story from a century ago, but I definitely prefer Carpenter's adaptation (and prefer both the the very loose adaptation Hawks did (in spite of being a huge Hawks fan in general).

Ooooh I’ll definitely have to check them out 🍿 thanks!
