This is @sox's latest improvement to live comments. Now when you're viewing a thread comments will just appear rather than requiring you click to show. It's kind of like google docs for threads.

It does some really clever stuff to not cause the page shift around, but it might not do it perfectly in all situations. So please mention us when it pisses you off, so we can adjust it. It's a moderately novel thing, to have trees of content update like a chat, so we didn't want to make too many assumptions and will rely on feedback to minimize frustrations with it.

Expect further improvements to this too. Our plan is to reuse this code for DMs (tree-Ms) before too long.

There were also some other bug fixes that went live after the last release over the last few weeks, but nothing really of note.

Previous release: #1051449

Going to be honest:

  • On desktop, both implementations are a bit distracting when I'm working on a longer reply. I often quote source articles, pictures, and so on and I spend a longer time with the write screen open. Also I'm a slow af boomer, sorry
  • On PWA, I don't mind as much because I anyway don't do long replies from mobile, so there its cool.

I was wondering: can I turn it off on desktop, to retain focus?

This is exactly the kind of feedback we’re looking for. It should be relatively trivial to implement a setting to disable it.

can I turn it off on desktop, to retain focus?

I implemented this in some way in the very first sketches but I wasn't really sure of its design so it didn't make the cut.

I was thinking of reusing the blue live dot for this, I'll cook a bit. Thank you for the feedback!

reply

The simplest is probably the most powerful: a checkbox in settings, i think that the functionality is just like show images, video, and 3rd party embeds.

I thought about that, but let's take human laziness into account: to toggle live comments you have to go to settings each time, leaving the post/comments you're reading and then go back. It might be cumbersome, but I can also be wrong.

Just brainstorming, but what about a non-invasive dot/button at the top of the comment section, that lets you toggle (for this post or the whole site) live comments at will?
This way the setting is not tied to your own account but rather to the browser you're using!

Or, you know, we can also have a mixed approach by having both a user-tied setting and a post-tied setting

reply

You can shortcut it with a do-not-disturb icon switch right next to notifications.

The air feels auto-live! (i’m gonna stop saying this when live comments improvements are done)

i'm mostly looking forward to the favicon stuff now. outlining feels a little unreliable too for some reason, but that might've just been in dev.

reply

Mmhhh, weird that it happens even with all the fallbacks that it has now. I'll take a closer look!

reply

i think it was just in dev. seems to be fine in prod so far

I keep forgetting to add that gif to my gif lexicon

reply

I had to create it just now from an X link cuz it's nowhere to easily copy from.

Also wtf part of the interview was this? Did a fan just turn on or something? lol

reply

yeah i don't recall this part of the interview either. thiel is usually pretty spacey though. maybe there are just many such moments and they blend in

lol never seen this one

reply

With these live comments will we still get red dot notification on notification icon?
There's a chance to miss some comments without this red dot, innit?

reply
29 sats \ 1 reply \ @sox 8 Aug

The notifications red dot remains and is separate from comments, its purpose is dedicated to many more things other than comments: zaps, mentions, etc.

The comments section doesn't have yet such things, other than a blue outline that distinguishes new comments from existing comments. A new way to know when there's a new comment is coming soon!

reply

That's great. Sometimes I miss some messages even in private direct messaging. Without this red dot I'd miss everything over here

reply

Awesome @sox!!!

Cool. But what if the new comment is somewhere you can't see? Do you get a notification for that? waiting here at the top of the page...

This is a glimpse of what live comments could look like.
We have new improvements that are set to be released by the end of next week, such as the ability to navigate between new comments that are not in your view. Can't wait!

reply

After trying it out, I think there should be a notification for new comments. Because when a post has a lot of replies, you don't even notice when new ones come in.

reply

You're right! There's a preview of what it could look like right here. What do you think? πŸ‘€

reply

This is way better, so I don't risk leaving the post without seeing all the comments. Ahah
