As a humble poster, I'm interested in what metrics are looking like now that we're well in CCs and whatnot.
How is growth and churn compared to last year, any positive developments or interesting things happening?
since getting back, SN feels a little deader than it was, although this could just be my imagination!
Stagnating. It does not look like SN will be the next Hacker News or the next Reddit. Instead, SN turned out to be a mid-sized Discord server. https://stacker.news/stackers/all/forever
I still think it's too early for "turned out to be" but that's a good description of where we're currently at.
There's still a lot of experimentation going on with territories and recruitment efforts have been very limited.
Exactly. SN is not bitcoin but this a lot like someone declaring bitcoin worthless in 2013.
I've never been more optimistic about SN's future. We've completed a lot of hard work that I wasn't sure we'd be able to. Like hard work usually goes, it's not immediately gratifying and isn't accompanied by fireworks, but it has a sneaky way of blooming when it does.
Regardless, even if SN is only ever a mid-sized Discord server (I don't think it will be), I plan is to spend the rest of my life building the best version of that.
took reddit a while but now worth 40 Billion!
overvalued?
everything is overvalued :P
Especially Reddit
i've never been more bullish on a mid-size discord server than i am on SN!
Love your determination @k00b. Just an acknowledgement that I'll be there forever with you on SN no matter what.
I hope you can tolerate a bit of nuisance coming from India.
🔥
I think since SN's main distinguishing feature is still niche, a "mid size discord server" is about all you can expect until Bitcoin/Lightning become more mainstream. For example, do we know of any text-based message boards focused on bitcoin that are larger than SN? I think SN's paths to growth are A) overall growth of bitcoin/lightning (which it has no control over), B) more product offerings. On point B, I think the P2P backend they've developed is a great starting point for developing other services.
What other services do you have in mind?
My sense is that we're still small enough that each new stacker who's highly engaged makes a huge difference in the quality of the site. That implies that outreach efforts might still pay decent rewards. I don't think there's been an ad push for a few years and several of us found SN through that Fountain ad.
I think I mentioned in another thread SN's potential as a blog / newsletter / static site hosting platform. It's basically got the skeleton in place for it.
Not sure what else it could offer. NOt really a product, but I think more shareability features, like how Twitter makes it really easy for people to embed tweets in other places, could help with visibility
I remember the hosting idea.
Embeddability would be nice. I hadn't thought about it explicitly, but I have thought there could be improvements with what get's seen when SN links are shared on nostr. They need more of a description/preview to entice clicks.
I think more about growing the creator tools to attract users. For instance, being able to embed clips from Fountain would be great.
That's an OG issue (Open Graph) I've risen for territories specifically. I agree, each item could have its own OG meta tags so it could be easily visualized when shared in other platforms.

I agree! We should invest more time on custom SEO capabilities without being too invasive. Starting with keywords and descriptions for posts and territories.
I believe SN needs to follow its own path, as it is currently going, with a fully functional approach and the goal of paying to post and comment, always to avoid spam and shit content.
I understand all these ideas and comparisons; it's a natural drive and desire to improve SN. This shows that the user community wants it to succeed.
Definitely too early to reach a conclusion! I'll heavily zap into anyone able to get the data to compare SN with what Substack, Hacker News or Reddit were after 3 years.
Well aren’t you Debbie downer
I think there's still a great little community here. Seems like some great bitcoiners were lost along the way, but I think they'll be back at some point.
There are also a lot of lurkers that aren't contributing but reading the content. Come join the fun!
I think it's my favorite bitcoin community. Nice balance of totally bonkers bitcoiners, semi reasonable libertarians, and a healthy dose of very interesting weirdos. Only place on the internet where I have engaging conversations. And I'm pretty sure it's the zappiest place on the internet.
Growth has certainly slowed down. And yup it’s more dead around here than usual.
But I think the team has been really focused on product development. I don’t think they really tried to grow users.
Plus people forget the early days of Reddit and these other social networks. It might be decade or more before SN gets traction like hacker news and other established social sites.
Also I expect growth to explode when the masses want sats and the price of bitcoin hits a real bull market of massive euphoria which hasn’t happened yet.
My first 100M sats were worth less than 100 fiat shitcoins... what's a real bull market? lol.
When your close friends ask “help me buy bitcoin”
Or “hey you have Bitcoin you must be rich now”
Happens every ATH - except this one (so is this a fake ATH or did everyone already buy the ETF?)
It’s a fake ATH. I’m waiting for the YOLO degen get a loan and buy bitcoin phase of the bull market
Probably a controversial opinion to have because many people here are growth maxis, but:
I think that quantities (of posts/MAU/sats) aren't necessarily a good metric for SN success unless the goal is to take over the world. Instead, I'd pose a more generic question: do you get from SN what you want, and if you don't, what's missing?
SN is currently a high-quality niche platform, and not normiespace like Reddit or X, which both have become enshittified through MAU-targeting. If you have a wish for higher quantities of specific content, you can play a role in getting that content discussed on SN, by sharing it, by making it visible, and so on [1].
Let's not death stare on statistics. Mainstream sucks; if it didn't, you probably wouldn't be here.
For example, I revived ~AI because the AI posts got lost across related territories. This was an action I could take to improve on my own and without anyone's permission. @billytheked started a territory last month too, to have a spot for the writers among stackers (and to develop more writing stackers.) ↩
Love this perspective. Your nym is well deserved!
It mirrors a little what's happening in bitcoin in general: treasury companies are in the mainstream news and mempools are empty. Seems like the number of people who are interested in learning about bitcoin tech and cypherpunk culture is down across the board.
Hey, I've had the same feeling. It definitely seems a bit quieter than it used to be. It's hard to say if it's real or just a shift in how people are using the platform, but you're not the only one who's noticed.
Wait till the subsidy disappears see who sticks around
I conceptualise SN like a staircase, if you look through the historical posts by k00b, ek and others, there is a constant stream of improvement announcements, to how SN can be utilised by any user. They are building an experience.
The more you're aware of in the Bitcoin community the more you're not aware of.
They will find SN
Not too sure, but you can count on Sensei to be here, no matter what
it was refreshing to see that you were still here getting your daily stacking in
You and me both
The system of that CC for deposits could be good that Stacker News is not wallet for sending and receiving invoices but focus on tipping posts and get rewarded in CC or satoshis if attached a wallet. But there is a crucial point the CC that you have earned could be withdrawan means if you receive 100 CC you could redeem 100 CC for 70 satoshis. Means split into two balance. CC is for tipping and withdrawable CC where 1 CC for 0,7 satoshis those you received for someone tipping your content in CC.
I have CC retardation reading this
