Some friends of mine told mine told me a story recently.
They were on a very long, unexpectedly difficult hike, and had gotten off trail. They knew where they were but it was VERY tough going, much steeper than expected.
Anyway, the trail was very difficult, and a high-strung member of the group was constantly narrating out loud the events as they were occurring - like "oh my gosh, this is so hard, we're going to fall and die". Or when somebody slipped and fell (minor fall), this person said something like "OMG, is he dead?" Stuff like that.
It was supposed to be a 4 hour hike, but ended up taking about 13 hours, AND a loved one called the search and rescue team. The search and rescue team met them as they were getting close to the logging road where their car was. All was okay, they were just tired, hungry, and cold.
But here's what they heard from the search and rescue team - there had been DOZENS of alerts that reached them, including their location. So, even though none of the hikers was actively trying to contact search and rescue, the iphone had been doing that for them, including their location.
They were shocked. I was shocked, too. So your conversation is constantly being monitored, and anything concerning is sent to the emergency pipeline?
Turns out that the emergency services actually only responded when a real person called them. But they have logs of large portions of their conversation on the hike.
Weird, huh? Anyone heard of this?
