Recently took the train to Lugano to see that the statue of Satoshi Nakamoto had indeed been removed by vandals. So I also used the opportunity to try using Muun at real world vendors. Now, I knew that Muun isn't REAL lightning, but I'd always had and still have an excellent experience using Muun online. Specifically, every transaction has been maybe a second to process. I tried Muun at three different vendors and every one of them was more than a minute of processing. One was several minutes and the waiter encouraged me to try again. I did so, but Muun said it had already processed that transaction. I can only imagine that the little vendor boxes that create and process a lightning transaction are really slow and inefficient.

Besides custodial lightning like WoS, the smoothest and most problem-free experience I've had with self-custodial LN in the IRL wilds is Phoenix and it's not even close.
I've seen people use Zeus very easily around me but for some reason txn take a while and often fail, forcing me to resync graph and whatnot. It might be an issue with my phone setup though. Wish it worked better.

Sadly, I left Lugano before having an opportunity to try other wallets.

If you were traveling, were you on Wifi or some kind of temporary eSIM? Wonder if connectivity issues can arise from using those, or if most LN issues are something else.

I was on regular cellular with a reasonable signal strength. No temporary SIM or eSIM. MUUN was super quick to open, show balance, read the QR code, and start the transaction.
I believe the slowness is a result of the box being used by the Lugano merchants. MUUN is super fast on all the online transactions I've ever done. I would like to hear the experience of other people in Lugano.

Very unlikely it's vendor lag, fake lightning wallets like muun use slow, unreliable, and expensive centralized swaps.
Try with a real lightning node, assuming the vendors use real lightning as well it'll be nearly instant and nearly free.

I don't recommend any mobile nodes, but at least Zeus, Blixt, and Phoenix make an honest effort.
I think the original Breeze is still maintained too, but I might be wrong, they pivoted to fake lightning recently.
Correct path is an always-on node, like Lightning.Pub, accessed remotely via nostr with ShockWallet
Zeus can use a remote node as well but is harder to set up, Alby also. Might be some LNbits options too.

I run a start9 and have both alby and zeus running. Connecting with zeus is always a pain, but when it works it's great. Alby does a great job. Very simple, usually reliable
