Stacker News Monthly: August 2025

Welcome to this month's edition of Stacker News Monthly! Today we're going to take a look back at the month of August 2025!
It was an especially wordy month with the Fiction Month Contest going on. This month, 622 stackers wrote 1,229,689 words across 4,089 posts and 18,361 comments, earning a total of 2,477,268 sats, for an average of 2.01 sats per word, and 2.48 sats per word on posts.
Let's take a look at how things performed in August, with a special deep dive into FM entries at the end!
Note: I'm still refining the methodology, so the numbers this month are not comparable to the numbers from July.

Fiction Month!

As you all know, August 2025 has been a wildly successful Fiction Month here on Stacker News. @Scoresby, @TotallyHumanWriter, and @siggy47 will be hard at work reading through the entries and awarding the winners this week, but in the meantime, let's take a look at some fun statistics about our fiction month entries!
According to my calculations1, there were a total of 56 Fiction Month entries submitted by 29 stackers, totalling 95,978 words and earning 163,145 sats, for an average of 1.70 sats per word. I was a bit disappointed that FM didn't attract a greater number of sats per word, but that's probably because these posts tend to be a lot wordier than the typical post generating a lot of discussion about bitcoin.
Unsurprisingly, the favorite word among Fiction Month entries was trust, as that was indeed the theme of the contest!
For some superlatives, we have the following:
Lastly, I asked ChatGPT to classify the genre of each of the stories, from a list of genres I gave it. Here are the results:
Do you agree with ChatGPT's classifications? Or is Chat just trippin'?
Anyway, hope you enjoyed this edition of Stacker News Monthly! Remember, stay humble and stack sats.

Footnotes

  1. I counted only 56 entries, likely due to a time zone difference in my API selection script. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to fix the issue, so I apologize to whoever's entry I left out of the stats!
Fantastic work! My fellow stacker!
reply
Very well done! Yes I agree with my classification. Very smart from ChatGPT, it could have got easily confused from my permanent mention of utopian elements yet it grasped the concept. I'm impressed.
reply
I'm going for sci-fi/mystery, maybe it's too short to get a sense at the moment.
reply
i detected the mystery, for the record
reply
It's pretty imperfect, and most stories are mixed genres. Mine could've been any of Dystopian, Utopian, Political Fiction, and Slice of Life, depending on which way you look at it.
reply
These posts are amazing. Eventually, we need to add a bunch of functionality to the analytics page so we can each dink around on this stuff.
reply
My shoestring spaghetti code I use to put these together is probably too sloppy for k00b et al haha.
reply
lol. the neo-hellenistic secessionist is comedy? I guess it is. It's more like mytho-scifi, but okay, i'm happy it's not in the 'other' box. 🤣
reply
comedy in the greek sense maybe? Haha. But given the podcast voice, I can see how it would be interpreted as comedy.
reply
yes indeed, it's neo-greco comedy. you're absolutely right
reply
Historical or Political Fiction:
can confirm
reply
Awesome! I love how you pulled all the stats together.
