The U.S. labor market continued to expand in 2024, but at a slower pace than the prior two years. Job growth remained fast enough to largely keep pace with population growth and wages rose faster than inflation. Upcoming Census Bureau data for 2024—set to be released on Tuesday—will reflect how these factors and others impacted annual earnings, income, poverty, and health insurance for workers, families, and children across the country.
It’s worth emphasizing that the upcoming Census data do not reflect any economic developments in 2025. Some policymakers will attempt to claim any good news from the data as validation of the current U.S. policy path, but this would be completely misleading given the radical policy shifts in 2025 under the Trump administration. In this piece, we argue:
[...]

The labor market mostly held strong in 2024

Persistent economic disparities leave families of color disproportionately vulnerable

Policy changes are weakening the economy in 2025

Health insurance coverage and access to food assistance will fall over the next several years

Timely and accurate data are essential but under threat

Zapped for ~econ content! I haven't been posting much new material other than Stacker News Monthly, and @denlillaapan and @Rothbardian_fanatic have been less active, too. And of course @Undisciplined is on his sports related sidequest, (haha jk you guy are doing a great job with ~Stacker_Sports)
Did you have commentary to add to this piece though?
From the posted summary, I don't see anything too weird. I agree that Trump cannot take credit for anything that comes out of this new data release
reply
I’m really hoping to have more time for ~econ soon. I have three projects in RR right now and a couple others that need me to do some empirical work in order for coauthors to move forward. Perfect storm

Yeah i've been busy with IRL work too. Maybe when we clear our plates we can work on a project studying the economics of internet message boards using SN data
reply
Professional or SN exclusive research?
I think it would be cool to do a series of posts that progress through the stages of producing economic research.
reply
Hopefully, something actually publishable. That would certainly dox us both, though
I think it would be cool to do a series of posts that progress through the stages of producing economic research.
That's a great idea, I think a lot of people would be interested in that
reply
Yeah, that kind of Stacker News exclusive seemed like a way to pursue some of the random ideas I’ve had that aren’t particularly publishable.
reply
It could be both, start with random explorations, see if anything more well developed emerges

I’m potentially game for that. It’s a departure from anything I’ve worked on before, but I like diving into new things.
From their site:
EPI’s vision for equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). The Economic Policy Institute’s vision is for all workers to share equally in the economic prosperity of our country. Our research exposes the forces that seek to exclude and diminish the power of people of color and women—particularly Black, Brown, and indigenous people—to the benefit of white supremacy and wealthy elites. We recognize the economic legacy of anti-Blackness; slavery; colonialization; oppressive policies, practices, and institutions; and the persistence of structural racism, sexism, and xenophobia today. Therefore, our vision elevates the importance of racial, gender, and worker justice as central to the world we want to see.
Therefore, their economic data is built upon lies.

It’s pretty clear to me that Epi’s on the left and anti-Trump, I’ve said it here before. I like to read and hear takes from both sides so I can make up my own mind. As for lies, I can’t really spot them, I just don’t know enough. If you can point out where the lies are, I’d appreciate it.
reply
They are looking to defend the economy under Biden. Don't need any specific data to know that was a train heading to oblivion. All you had to do was be alive and try to live in the conditions that were being created. Since this place is EDI oriented, you are guaranteed they are down with that sickness. No need to go over their data with a fine tooth comb, anymore than you might a meth head's claims.
reply
I’m more into the facts than picking sides. Don’t care if they’re with Biden or Trump. So what data are they actually lying about?
reply
Fact is, Biden was never supposed to be president (and indeed wasn't actually). Build your facts from there.
reply
figured this chat ain’t going anywhere
reply
It was a non-starter from the moment you posted the post.

Looks like my little jab got to you. No need to catch feelings, just had to point out the data you claim is false. Guess you couldn’t. All good, take it easy!
