This feature seems like a no-brainer to me. Is there any plan to implement this?
I write so much stupid stuff, can I please clean up the mess?

My suggestion would be following implementation.
  • have a "delete" button in the "..." dropdown. Visible only to the author.
  • author clicks on the button
  • if there are no sats on the post, then it maybe just shows up confirmation "Are you sure?" dialog, but otherwise deletes the post
  • if there are some sats on the post (e.g. 1000), then it would show a dialog with table like
Post earned: +1000 sats Deletion fee/donation: -1000 sats (will be donated into daily rewards) === TOTAL: 0 sats
  • And the sats would be donated to the daily rewards. (effectively reducing the authors balance by 1000 sats)
The reason for donating the sats to rewards is that the person that paid the sats already received their value (because presumably they already read the post). So there's no need to return the money to them. On the other hand removing post with sats is undesirable (we want to keep valuable posts ;)), so the person removing it should lose some sats.
If the author of the post already withdrew their sats from SN, then fair enough - I don't see that as a huge problem. If we would be really strict, the dialog could ask them to deposit 1000 sats to be able to delete the post... but that sounds like a bit too much.

yeah i like this approach.
free post deletion could be available if less than 10 mins have passed and/or if no tips have been paid.
otherwise, i think the strict version of your dialog box makes sense… we really want people to keep their best posts on this site.
would be a nice bonus for the daily rewards pool.

It's planned. There's no opposition to allow deletes on my end.
Just too much to do.

I love SN, this is my go-to Bitcoin news place

one thing that deleting posts introduces is the question of what to do with the sats.
if i tip someone sats for their post, i’d feel disappointed if they immediately deleted it.
@calle, what do you think of making the user pay back the amount of sats they were tipped in order to delete their post?
reply
I think the model of reddit is quite good: just delete it and don't care about the Karma. Would be a huge pita to roll back all tips for a single post. Tipped is tipped 🤷
reply
fair point, it is a simpler appproach.
however, one difference between karma & sats is that people think twice about spending their sats, there is no downside for giving karma on reddit.
amplifying content on SN has a real cost, and comes with an implicit promise that your sats will go towards spreading the message you are supporting.
breaking that promise with users by letting anyone delete their posts for free could lead to fewer people tipping overall.
reply
as a counter-argument, not allowing post deletion at all could also be preventing people from even posting in the first place.
reply
sats on deleted posts could be donated to the rewards pool

This is a great idea 💡
yup, makes sense that fees for deleting a post go directly back to the best users.
Won't work though as the sats are already sent to the poster right? I think tipped is tipped, what happens after then is no one else's business.
Make all deletes replace by fee :P charge em for their mistakes
reply
Yeah, we should have a delete button, but...
Not having one makes you think harder before posting something.

UPDATE
Posts and Comments can now be deleted:
SN release: deletes 😱, link stuff, and post duplicate stuff #121947

FWIW, I don't post much on Stacker News, cuz I know I can't edit or delete if it is later revealed to need an edit or delete because it's unfactual "news".

I have been wondering the same thing. Boosting.

I for one don't care strongly if someone deletes a post I tipped and get to keep the sats. I already read the post and 99% of the post I read I only read once. So I got my values worth even if it's deleted later. 99% of posts probably won't be deleted as well. Let's have basic delete feature and see how we go?

ya feel the same about some of the things I said here also. uhm. yee. I really should delete one comment I made here cuz it uhm, it's not that I said anything that I regret or anything. Sometime I spill too much outta mi heart. I could get into trouble if somebody start searching me. uhm. not that I paranoid or anything. when u got the time @k00b when u got the time. No hurry no worry.

Would love this as well. It does make question what I chat about here.

I second the motion for a delete button.
No one really enjoys the cringe when confronted with their “stupidity” from the past. 😅😊
reply
I don't think you should be able to delete a comment or post from long ago.
I imagined delete to work like edit where you have 10 minutes.
reply
Could this be one factor responsible for the high quality of content on this site? No delete = you got to write to the best of your abilities.
reply
Good point here.

Is the ability to "delete" fiat thinking even? Do it once, do it right? Just thinking out loud...
reply
Yes, exactly.
