Nepal protests drive spike in Bitchat downloads #1215979

I would download it but I go no one to use it with. With SN and Nostr I have had my fill of social apps with little to no people use

Using Bitchat, am I likely to find someone nearby who's also using it? How close do they need to be? Would I have to be in a larger city?

If we’re talking about the “Nepal case”, where Internet may be down, Bitchat relies solely on Bluetooth, hence very short range. However, it supports Nostr for long range communications if you do have Internet connection. In that case you can chat globally.

Tox is good, works globally, and is available in linux, which bitchat does not appear to be.

There have been many attempts to create p2p censorship resistant messengers. Each one has their strengths and weaknesses (Bitchat too). I’ll try to prepare a comparison and publish it tomorrow.

Tox works well globally with the only problem I can see is the need to share the key to encryption with your respondent without that initial sharing message being intercepted. Bitchat looks to be restricted to bluetooth range so requiring a high concentration of users to achieve connectivity? Plus no Bitchat program available for linux?

We should use the #sn geohash lol
