I'm trying to understand why people use Discord. This week we've seen it mentioned a few times in the news. Once with how the protesters in Nepal were using it to elect a new leader, and the other with messages Tyler Robinson used for the alleged assassination of Charlie Kirk.
I had a discord account from 2017-18. I think I joined to get tech support, but then didn't touch it for years. I recently logged back in for the Rizful community, but have little interest in it and don't particularly like the UX.
The funny thing is that Discord often comes up in conversation with other parents in our local community. Some that are quite unexpected. I thought it was for gamers or for the more tech savy among us. Turns out it isn't the case.
If you do use it, why?

I don't use it since a decade or so.
Discord is echo chamber paradise and it operates like a honeypot, kind of like Telegram.
If you want to start a cult, completely gaslight a large group of people into whatever flavor of extremism your brain appreciates the shortcuts for, this is the platform for you. Just know that everything you say on Discord will be used against you and you may very well get arrested.

🎯Exactly people have always tried to get me to switch PL chat to discord but it always felt exactly what your describing. I prefer Slack because it forces a more productive business environment. Even if it’s lame people don’t get out of line with how they speak.

I've never seen a serious startup using discord as their comms channel, but many with Slack. This makes sense too: Discord was originally built for gamers, whereas Slack was built for startups.

I use it because two groups I'm a part of prefer to use that as their coordinating mechanism.
I don't use it for anything else. I don't really like using it.

Yes I do, mostly regarding the crypto projects. I also joined during 2018/19 but struggled to understand so stopped using it but started using again in 2022 and now I understand it well and find it quite useful.

I only use it for team coordination in certain games, because the team uses it. Otherwise, I put it in the same category as Telegram (useless apps)

I’ve used it for various communities which were only there, like BitAxe support and mechanical keyboards. I don’t regularly use it though
