Worse still, this happens a lot, with people thinking or making up stories that they witnessed large-scale events. It reminds me of a story about a plane that crashed, and all the witnesses swore it fell like a fireball until they got close-up footage that showed there was no fire.

But why did she do it all?
Do lies wrapped in enough layers becoming self-sustaining? And is the personal lie subconsciously ignored as it adds to the collective greater ‘good’

Maybe she was a planted patsy, an actor ? It's an incredible story btw, show how easy we were all fooled on many aspects.

She didn’t seem very good at it… but then perhaps she didn’t have to be (which is pretty damming of society in itself)
