I've used it for chat rooms for my family. It works pretty well, but their notifications don't always work. 

I've also used it for file transfer between devices. It works pretty good that way, although I haven't done really big files. 

I don't use keet. I downloaded it once long ago and gave it a spin but haven't touched it since

yep direct connections were something we lost very early as the internet grew (we don't have enough ip addresses for every device so we have one per residence instead and it creates these problems that
