it gets mentioned, but from what i have noticed, people don't use it
I know that at one time there was an effort within the bitcoin design community to onboard more designers to penpot exclusively, but I don't remember how that went
designers also grumble about using figma...but they still do it?

Asked a buddy (designer), they replied: 'I remember it being quite shitty'.
It's gotta be 10x Figma before people seriously start trying.

I post because Penpot just had an update, but I feel like it's missing the love.
You can self host, but I feel the paid version is very reasonable.
Personally I'm not a designer, but would be happy to collab with one using penpot the next chance I get.

it is definitely missing the attention it deserves. It's true, as a foss project, it is hard to reach what commercial competitors are up to, in terms of functionalities, performance, but also marketing and users.
if no one use it, it will probably get unmaintained and buried. One need to have patience and be open to unlearn and re-learn a bit how things could be done differently. Especially if coming from commercial tools. The same happens when migrating from Windows to Linux for example. It's difficult to change what we are use too, but once done, life becomes much easier, especially when we see those error popups as a bad memories.
Happy to help if you need setting it up for your next project, as Penpot can be self-hosted too.
