Thanks for the report. Really interesting to hear your account of events! ⚡
Getting deemed "essential" is more of a curse than a blessing for the Congressional staffers because welp we are legally entitled to backpay even if we are furloughed and if we are essential we are not allowed to take any sort of time off even if we are sick.

How that that latter part work in practice? Like, I get them saying, "no, you can't take a sick day for your dentist appt," but if you say, "I'm in the ER where they're trying to re-attach my severed arm," do you actually get in trouble?

To be honest I have no idea.... I figure medical emergencies they kinda are forced legally to let you but otherwise it seems like and I could be wrong that you might have to cancel a dr appointment. I feel like most of this is really aimed at people traveling and stopping that and I am sure most offices are flexible with stuff like Dr. appointments but yeah otherwise ya kinda gotta cancel everything....

I think you can still call in sick. It's just that you can't actually use sick leave. From what I understand, you go into furlough status for the days you miss.

Yeah I mean I know my office would let me but the whole thing is super uncharted territory lol
