pull down to refresh

Every so often I come across interesting articles / content and I check to see if someone has posted it before. Sometimes it has been posted but only got a few sats and has 0 replies, despite being quite interesting. Is there a mechanism on SN to help pump old posts? If I add some sats to an old post, will the algorithm still bring it up into view for other Stackers or is old content deprioritized. What's the etiquette on reposting with a link to the original post?

a great way to bring up golden oldies is to use the search and link references in the posts and comments to contextualize yours. From SN I'd expect the search to be prominent and functional on as many aspects as possible, from relevance to date filters, etc. Not saying that isn't already, simply I don't feel finding what I look for sometimes. However, it is a great and underestimated tool.
Related items also do a great job, but most of the time the items listed are unrelated with the main topic. For example, on this post I get:
  • #281689 What did Satoshi move on to after Bitcoin?
  • #821035 cure53 audits noble-ciphers and noble-curves
  • #599176 Paranemo Activity?
  • #482635 The most Fiat advertising campaign ever
  • #933741 What's the oldest thing you own and still use it?
🤔 how are these related with this topic? I'd like to know... Indeed, if I run a search I can find some more related posts:
  • #66361 Thoughts on tipping older posts & evergreen content
  • #990241 Golden Oldies #47
  • #361591 Old posts in territories?
  • #471053 Post the oldest photo on your phone
  • #773926 Golden Oldies #20
  • #665609 TIL “This Day on SN” are posts from the past
Golden Oldies appears twice, kudos to @siggy47! I'd also have expected to see more "This day on SN" in the search results. Maybe keywords do not match?

This is a good question. I'm pretty sure that zapping old posts won't get them back on the front page.
The best way to do it would be to repost the link or item, maybe with a little added commentary of your own. If you put a link to the original post at the top, I'm sure people wouldn't mind. If you really wanted to be nice you could forward sats to the original author.
Zapping old posts will affect where they show up if you go to https://stacker.news/top/posts/day (change the for drop down to whatever time frame you like). So there may be some benefit to it there.
If you go through the trouble of finding an old post, I'd be interested to see it -- so my vote is repost it.

How do I forward sats?

I think @k00b's at least mulling over how to let old posts resurface to the front page.
I'd rank improving this very highly, in terms of what will make SN a more valuable resource for both readers and writers.

We’re going to remove trust in ranking for November. That’d be a good time to do this if I don’t forget

Currently posts/comments are ranked by trust and sats. We are interested in seeing what a system without trust looks like. Meaning, everything will be ranked by sats instead.

Are WoT here since the beginning? I think it could be better let only sats determine what is good and legit. In this new way is downzaps still a thing?

Downzaps will still be a thing. I haven't figured out how that'll work yet. Maybe something like outlawed = max(sats_invested * 0.1, 1000) otherwise downzaps just downrank an item proportionally

Second reposting with a link, followed by your comment. Best way to get new discussion going.
You probably want to quote some of the original post, though. You shouldn't expect most people to actually click the link and read the original post.

Yes! I should have made this more clear. By "repost" I mean completely copy the old post, possibly using > to make it indent for quote text. Also putting a link, also adding your commentary.

i definitely think someone shud be reposting classic posts or thought-provoking posts in order to bring attention to the wisdom hidden among the digital clutter and artificial noise; @siggy47 has done it very well, i admire his attempts at resurrecting valuable information from the stacker archives;
@Kontext does a great job as well, bringing attention to the classic works of antiquity, in form of quotes for example;
@DarthCoin constantly reposts his guides; i lost count of how many of my bookmarks are of darthcoin guides;
i am still building my special portfolio of information for when stackers wake up to the problem of not knowing the Self or the enemy of the Self;

Yeah what @nkmg1c_ventures points out is one of the things I have a problem with in regards to how most social media works nowadays - everything is very ephemeral. Whatever you post, it usually has a shelf life of like 24 hours, maybe a week max if it's something really good. I don't quite know how to change that though.
I guess that's one of the reasons why I decided to gather up a bunch of my thoughts into a book (#1074789) - to hopefully give these ideas a medium in which they are preserved in a more timeless manner.

thank u for sharing the book, i missed the memo! i will read it and type up feedback, as soon as i get out of the fiat mines soon;

Necromancy zaps/boosts!
10% of stackers are designated as necromancers during a particular week. If they resurrect a thread that ends up stacking a lot more sats, they get rewarded, and the resurrected thread gets stickier somehow.
Just some showerthoughts
EDIT: hey necromancy is kind of on theme for october too

@siggy47 does a bi-weekly Golden Oldies. Latest post here: #1233672 (and you can browse them backward)

I use search a lot to find any source of an information that I want to know and often I find many good posts from time ago. I zap it even if this doesn’t rise that content again to hot page. I think the best we can do is search old content by ourselves and zap it. I have my own policy to deal with many things here in SN.

May be sort posts by random way.
