What Conservatives think of progressive Christians when they talk about Jesus commands to care for those in need.
This is kinda tongue in cheek. I know that plenty of Conservative and Progressive Christians actually directly or in-directly voluntarily feed and cloth the poor. It just gets old listening to people speak in bad faith to each other when they both know they are full of it.
The disagreement isn't on the command. Its the how. This is almost always the disagreement. Regardless of the how, Jesus was clear that what we do to the least of these we do to him. I don't believe that means my tax dollars fill the bill. Nor do I think I can just ignore this command since the state steals from us and do some good things.
The truth is we all like to edit, add, and ignore parts of Jesus teachings because its not easy. Lets be honest about it guys.
What matters is our hearts and what we actually do with our time, talent, and treasures.
Have you heard the saying, "If you're under 40 and a Republican you have no heart, and if you're over 40 and a Democrat you have no brain?"
I think there's some truth to that saying. In my experience within Christian circles, the progressives usually haven't thought carefully enough about the policy consequences of what they advocate, and the conservatives are often guilty of callousness to the plight of the poor, or at the very least, quite unwilling to show empathy.

Yep, I have heard that and I agree with you. The modern wrinkle is the Trump era is so abrasive that this factor alone becomes a factor for people. Especially ones that live on the surface level. Those that haven't realized how two faced political figures actually are.
