As the title says. I am not planning to make a living out of it, more about
  • Learning
  • Contributing a small bit to the decentralisation (I read that mining pool centralisation a bigger threat to BTC than quantum attack)
  • A small positive return over the electricity cost (18 cents/kWH) will suffice
A few details
  • Subtropical climate, so I do not need a heater
  • Minimal configuration and settings
  • My power outlet is 220 volts, 50 Hz. Single phase, type G outlet (engineering details, not sure if they matter)
  • It will run literally in my home, so not too much heating or noise
Are there options for beginners out there?
Also, some general metrics that I should look for when judging a miner (like when buying a laptop I can look at the RAM, HDD etc.)? Should I look for metric like TeraHash/second, or TeraHash/kwh etc.?
Apologies if the question is too broad, but you can consider it asking for general introduction someone interested attempt some mining.

Start with a Bitaxe or Nerdaxe IMO. The electricity use is negligible and you'll get a better idea about mining and mining pools.

Thanks, both of them are pool based solutions with some consistent payout? Or solo mining lottery tickets?

With two Bitaxe gamma miners back in June, I was earning approximately 120 satoshis daily through Braiins LN.
Recently, I switched to parasite.space as per the pool rule. The miner who successfully mines a block receives a reward of 1 Bitcoin, while the remaining amount is distributed among the miners.
Although the chances of hitting are extremely low, the additional incentive motivates me to take the risk and still earn a reward if a block is found. However, the pool has yet to find a block. The pool is new and it just launched this year

You can choose whichever pool you like. Braiins and Ocean both have LN payouts (Ocean is more difficult to set up as it requires Bolt12). The payouts aren't big so I think it's better to solo mine (Datum, Public-pool or CK-pool).
