As for me, I’m still over the moon. I was lucky enough to catch a few bands live last weekend, and now I’m completely hooked!

It all began with my husband. He’s into a genre I’ll never fully understand: breakcore.

I once told him that making breakcore is easy: just drop the amen break, toss in some weird noises, sprinkle a funny or creepy sample (maybe a screaming cat), add a few violins and finish with some tutupa tutupa, and voilà: you’ve got a song🤌🏻 He cracked up and showed me this video of one of breakcore’s OGs saying almost the same thing. Glad to see he doesn’t take it too seriously, I laughed hard.

The artist (or now, band) my husband really wanted to see was Igorrr. According to my husband (not my words!), Igorrr’s last real album was Hallelujah.

I have to admit: they were awesome live. We’d seen them before, but this time I noticed that what used to be their defining sound, breakcore, has now become more of an interlude between songs. A bit of a shame, even for someone who’s not into the genre. Still, they gave one hell of a show. My only note: maybe tone down the lighting just a tad, there were moments I felt genuinely blinded 😅

Now for the revelations of the night (for me): Two bands I discovered thanks to this lineup absolutely blew me away.

First up: Imperial Triumphant, a black metal band from New York who describe their sound as Avant Death. They ripped it. Sadly, the vocals came across a bit muddy (too distant and unclear) but musically? Top notch. You have to see them live if you ever get the chance. Just a small warning: they have a “champagne moment,” so if you’re in the front row… bring an umbrella 🥂☂️

Pretty sure the guy who sold me a patch afterward was actually one of the band members, but I was too shy to ask. Later I checked their Instagram and it looked like it really was him!

Next: Master Boot Record. They call their style computer metal, and it fits perfectly. They absolutely shredded the stage and yes, one of their animations humorously featured a Windows install. Totally electrifying. They sounded even better live than in any videos I’d found beforehand.

After the show, I grabbed a patch from them too. When one of the guitarists said hi, I had to tell him how blown away I was. Totally worth it!

Two and a half hours and a few pin pricks later, I finally sewed my new patches and I swear, I feel like the coolest kid on the block 😎
