Autonomous driving will make public transportation anywhere outside of city centres obsolete. More and larger highways is good.
Would you rather take a car from door to door or drive to a train station, park your car, then take a train to another train station and you still have to find a way from that train station to your final destination.
Two steps is more efficient than four.
Gotta be ready for the future, for sure, but I also think having some legit public transport, like a train or the subway, is key for the day-to-day grind.

For city centres absolutely. There is simply not enough space to build and expand roadways to accommodate that many daily commuters and many city centre dwellers would prefer not to have a car. I get where subways, buses, trains, taxis, bike share etc add value in those situations. I am thinking more city to city or suburb to city or suburb to suburb.
I do think super fast light rail trains between specific destinations like two major cities also makes sense.
