The number of people known to have been killed in a deadly police raid in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday has risen to 132, officials say.

This is more than double the figure cited after the police operation in the favelas (poor neighbourhoods) of Alemão and Penha, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday.

The public defender's office, which provides legal assistance to the poor, made the new death toll public after grieving residents lay dozens of bodies in a square early on Wednesday.

The police raid was the deadliest in the city, where authorities have for decades tried to contain the gangs which control many of its poorer neighbourhoods.

That's so sad! 132 lives lost aaah! unimaginable

reply

Yeah, it's a staggering number

reply

Wow! No due process? Well us Americans are blowing up fishing boats carrying drugs so we have no moral high ground

reply

Legal process? Forget about it. I don't think you get how the favelas run with those gangs in charge. It's kinda like the Italian Mafia that used to be in the States, but way more violent. I'm sure there are some innocent people among the dead, but most of 'em were just ruthless criminals.

reply

Even criminals should have due process right?

reply

The ones who survive are gonna have due process. What happens is, the cops roll up to arrest them and they get met with bullets. Then you get all this stuff you're seeing.

reply

I'd read there was violence in Brazil, but 132 in a single raid? Damn. Not all police shootings either, apparently the gangs dropped explosives from drones
