China got a new export now, railway keynesianism.
Build, build and build to blow up more bubbles then get the national government to rescue.

Chinese are always building, I respect their energy into development.

80% of the politburo are trained engineers. Unlike some places where the leaders are game show hosts, property speculators and corporate - bankers lobbyists. The modern economy including bullet trains is dependent upon electricity supply - China supplies it to its producers and consumers at half the cost or less than is paid in the west.

i.e. get the already struggling Chinese middle class to foot the bill

Why Chinese Middle class here? China will squeeze the payment out of Indonesia anyway.

Ultimately, the burden falls on the domestic populace. The rich won't pay it and the poor can't.
Even if they're trying to extract wealth from other nations, that's not economically efficient, so we're back to squeezing the domestic middle class.

Nothing new under the sun. No different to how the US uses the IMF, World Bank, SWIFT and BIS to advance the interests of its corporates across the world. If that fails it calls in the CIA and its military. Ask Indonesia about the one million of its citizens killed on the orders of the CIA in the 1960s.
China can however build these infrastructure projects far more effectively than any western contractor. Just like the British once did with rail and telephonic infrastructure. High speed data cables run along the rail corridors and extend your infrastructure and trade capture and control...and ultimately via banking you enjoy hegemony.
China is winning the trade war. USA cannot fight a war until it regains rare earths supply chains and China is still blocking exports for military purposes. US military capacity is crippled for the next decade, at least.

Chin is building these throughout S.E.Asia. Through Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia. Reverse engineering the rail infrastructure built by the British Empire in the 19th century.

Met a pastor from a developing country that made deals with the Chinese. He told me that the population are now really chafing under it. The Chinese treat them with racism and like slaves. For example, to get them to work harder, they take the feet off wheelbarrows so the workers can't set it down to take breaks. Knowing Chinese people, I'm not surprised.
