Most household pets are overweight. I talked to experts to find the best ways to get your furry friend to shed a few pounds.
I recently found myself googling “how to get your cat to lose weight” and stumbled upon countless Reddit threads and pet blogs with vague, often contradictory information. Full disclosure: This particular search was brought on when my cat's automatic litter box sent me a notification that my cat Basil was at the heaviest he's ever been—17 pounds.
I often joke that Basil is just a big, corn-fed Missouri boy, of hardy stock. He's always been a big cat, but after consulting my vet, she said he should ideally hover around 15 pounds. So I set out on a mission to find out how pet parents can get their often-overweight cats and dogs to lose weight healthily; especially for pet parents like me with indoor cats who live in small areas. I talked to vets and pet experts, researched, and used my own cats as guinea pigs to find out the most effective ways to get your pet to lose weight at home.

Just try and maintain a healthy weight for our dog. When we got her she was malnourished but my wife fixed that and fattened her up. She is probably about 5 lbs heavier than she should be right now. She has some intestinal issues so the vet doesn't want her going long periods without eating so we need to be very regimented when and how much we feed her.
My dog is hilarious. She pretty much knows down to the minute the times she gets fed and if I am even slightly late she will sit in front of me, stare at me and start talking until I feed her (a woo wooo woo a woo woo woo). My wife jokes that she is telling me off. Haha

Haha. I dunno how they do it, but dogs are clock-masters, especially when grub's involved. My buddy's dog is even next level. When it's chow time, the dude actually brings his food bowl right over to him. Ain't sure if he does that every day, but I've seen it go down a few times.
