This is pretty good. There's a lot of interesting things about how they've decided to do this, but maybe the thing that hit me the hardest is how Square doesn't try to say anything about lightning. It's just Bitcoin payments. I often get so caught up in the weeds, I forget that that's probably how we need to be talking to the rest of the world.

Well, if a cashier says they accept bitcoin, I have to ask between on chain, liquid or lightning, to open up the right wallet? So at the very least the retail assistant should know the word to communicate?
I’m getting the impression that most places in the world that already use bitcoin as everyday money are almost exclusively doing it using (custodial) lightning. I’m pretty sure that question would actually confuse most bitcoiners anywhere at this point. I bet at this point that most folks that know the difference between bitcoin and L2s still aren’t using bitcoin as their primary currency.
There still are e-commerce sites that accept bitcoin payment only on chain sats
yeah for sure, especially the companies that integrated btc payments early on. I think a lot of businesses in the early days set up and haven't upgraded to lightning since.
No doubt. I’m just saying in general.
This is great but still looks like a lot of friction getting merchants to setup Bitcoin payments in their terminals. Only way I see this working for the majority is if customers request it.
