Interesting he is "leaving" - I half think he nudged out.
I always liked listening to Lecun throw coldwater on LLMs, but a comment on HN really made a great point:
In industry research, someone in a chief position like LeCun should know how to balance long-term research with short-term projects. However, for whatever reason, he consistently shows hostility toward LLMs and engineering projects, even though Llama and PyTorch are two of the most influential projects from Meta AI. His attitude doesn’t really match what is expected from a Chief position at a product company like Facebook. When Llama 4 got criticized, he distanced himself from the project, stating that he only leads FAIR and that the project falls under a different organization. That kind of attitude doesn’t seem suitable for the face of AI at the company. It's not a surprise that Zuck tried to demote him.
What is a "world model"?

Hmm, we seem to be quite a ways away from that. Not surprising that he wouldn't get much support within Meta for pursuing that...

Ride the hype while it lasts!

Exactly. The new hype is "autonomous robot" and "AI led automation" - and in fairness those cannot be achieved with LLMs (we don't navigate our 3D world based on "language"). Thus....there needs to be some new tech.
LeCun is smart, so he probably ran the numbers: (a) Stay at Meta and get forced into LLM product support, or (b) Jump into new hype and make a few hundred million and maybe works / maybe not.

We already have tech that can see and hear what's going on around us, and with the help of AI, that stuff could get a huge boost.
The biggest problem is that this tech needs way more computing power than the AI itself.
I could be wrong, but I just don't see that tech going mainstream in our lifetime.

Good points. Which makes sense for someone like him, he's probably more interseted in being on the forefront of a moonshot than building commercial apps on top of LLMs
