Someone on nostr pointed this out, and Gigi picked it up with some enthusiasm.

I not a fan...and perhaps that exposes the problem with sats: spelling it out is ugly. There's probably got to be a symbol.

You may have noticed in all the recent pictures of Square terminals that the BIP 177 version of ₿ = sat was used. A lot of recent wallets have also gone down this road.

Are we headed to a world where we say sats but we write ₿?

Are we headed to a world where we say sats but we write ₿?

How about writing $ but saying sats?

The dollar sign looks like a S, and if fiat is going to die anyway, maybe we should start by disgracing it in our language.

But yeah, it probably couldn’t get any more confusing than that.

Credits to @itsTomekK because I’ve heard this idea from him for the first time.

reply

I tried out the Square terminal thing today. Bought a coffee. It displayed a price in dollars first, and then when I told them I wanted to pay in bitcoin, they pressed a button and it displayed sats (using the ₿ symbol). It would have been pretty messy if I told them bitcoin and they switched to a dramatically different number with the same symbol...

When everybody is confused, nobody is confused

reply

writing sats is easier than going to copy paste the symbol which doesnt exist on a keyboard, the display with both is even more confusing/cluttered than just sats alone

Eventually the market will come to a consensus, but the symbol seems forced and more of a vanity project than an emergent UX improvement

The lightning bolt as a symbol is more organic for sats, the only objection is from Lightning disrespectors... in on-chain contexts the B fits better but should I think be only used with decimal values rather than sat values

reply

I do like the lightning bolt as a symbol, but I fear that usage will wither on the branch. It never even caught on that much among lightning wallets.

I used to like it, now it looks silly. It’s an emoji.

Ehhh that's a distinction without a difference, both are unicode characters, but yes a simpler one would probably be best

Ok fair, but ⚡️doesn’t look like a serious symbol for money like £ € $ ¥. Bitcoins Satoshis deserve a proper symbol. Using ⚡️is like an inside joke.

Also fair

There is this more basic one: 🗲

There's yet another even simpler one but i'm struggling to find it, dont know what its properly called

Might have been thinking this, but its font dependent... ϟ

Wallets generally have to unify balance between chain and lightning which is a complication. If you show the balance with a bolt, a user may assume their entire balance is on LN, when there could be a chain balance reflected in that

Amount is a factor too, it should really switch when the decimal value is greater than .009 or so where a chain payment is more viable

I was sympathetic to bits because I think people get hung up on <100 sats left in Lightning wallets because of fee reserves needed, and in chain context the last two digits are superfluous since tx fees will eat them anyway, they could be a smaller font (like cents)

Bits for Lightning and Chain balances bridge the gap a bit with long decimal values, problem is its not really a thing beyond an aesthetic abstraction and died before this was realized

lightning bolt as a symbol

Sats aren't mentioned here but you know immediately by looking at it what the unit is

Biggest drawback to bits in UX may be that if this was was a .11 instead of 11 you might think it was cents had I not put the fiat value underneath it

reply

I can see how bits can be the most logical way to proceed...but they are dead in the water to me. I don't see people ever navigating some chunk of sats other than 1 bitcoin.

reply

How would you think of a skulldugerous use of bits? don't call it bits but just make the last 2 sats when sats >99 being a smaller font than the 100+?

reply

all make sense now: Satoshi invented these symbols on keyboards long before they created Bitcoin... sneaky bastards

reply

seriously, they selected number 7 for their currency symbol? that is fucked up, trying to dupe people into believing that Bhat and 7 are linked thru the divine; in addition, they have the largest number of lady boys; i am upset;
even the dollar sign doesn't appear next to a 1 or a 7 or a 9;
$ is actually next to a 4 (square/ground/earth), telling people exactly where they belong;

There used to be 2 lines through the dollar symbol when it was backed by sound money. Now, we only use one line to represent fiat money with no backing.

So, your meme should be updated to have 2 lines through the S.

On MacOS, if you open the Character Viewer (same place you get emojis like ⚡️), and copy & paste the ₿ symbol into the search var, you'll see it, labelled "Bitcoin sign". Add it to Favorites, then its as easy to get to as ⚡️.

Other OSes probably have something similar.

reply

It is difficult. typing multiple characters is annoying. probably more so than going through emoji selection. I love all the imagery of the lightning bolt and the kabab symbol, but I think they are step too far for normie world. Many bitcoiners might even struggle with them.

reply

how do u go thru the emoji selection?
i always go thru a github page, then copy-paste;
it's -///- or sats, both take some time, depends on the keyboard typing skill and
the message one wishes to convey; sats are fine by me when typed, but when i hand-write, it's -///- upright; i keep the lines wonky/slanted, in a caligraphic fashion;

Dropping 7 (+2) hours video and expecting others to catch the meaning of the 丰 it is way too optimistic. There's definitely some truth there, but again, you cannot expect everyone to digest this bombs in a easy way. For many, and for you too I guess, it takes years of study, you'll risk being dismissed and misunderstood. Use your words wisely.

There's a difference between Lightning and Lightening lol. sats are the unit of account for the first, what's the one for the latter? But hey, let's keep the lighting on on the matter

reply
it takes years of study, you'll risk being dismissed and misunderstood.

information is conveyed thru repetition: people have been dumbed down thru repetition of incorrect signal for eons; educators will have to raise people's consciousness thru repetition of correct signals, and repeat things whether or not the receiver's ears are ready or even want to hear it;

  • "hey u shud look at bitcoin, hey u shud look at bitcoin, hey, hey, hey!"
  • "use lightning, use it, use it, use lightning"
  • "study the babble, study the babble, study the babble" (a reference to the natural language of babies, 1 min clip);

one cannot read the bible of nature's building blocks once and expect to get it all;

how many people have read Darthcoin's guide in the first day? in the last 5 years? u pointed out that the way i type posts looks like note-keeping; the kinds of posts i produce are meant to be referenced again and again and ring true many years later; i re-read my own posts routinely in order to make sure they are still OK - how many stackers do that?

once there is a good system in place on SN for referencing archives, the guides will work better! honestly, most posts in the daily feed today are slop;

Sats is clean.
The symbol is… decoration.
It doesn’t grow from the ground
it’s planted, forced. Like someone deciding all apples should be painted red for “brand consistency.” Pretty maybe. But not better.

Bitcoin is 16-17 years old, logarithmic growth make this frame a space in time where plenty of evolution happened. Cultural differences and people coming from different experiences with Bitcoin will call it differently. We also know about same written word meaning different things in different languages. Same happen with sounds.

So the inverse is also true, different words and sounds sometimes refers to the same archetype.

People can call the smallest bitcoin denomination as they wish, the important fact is that we use it.

reply

Honestly, I think we are heading toward a world where we say “sats” but write “₿” — and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

“5000 sats” looks clunky, and that’s probably why Square terminals and a bunch of wallets are already using the BIP-177 idea where ₿ actually represents a sat. It’s cleaner, more “currency-like,” and way easier on a payment screen.

But it also rewrites what ₿ has meant for years.

Still, the momentum is there:
people talk in sats,
wallets display ₿,
and BTC becomes just the ticker for whole coins.

Not saying I love it… but it feels like that’s where UX is pushing the ecosystem.
