I know what you mean. I do both and I'm much more productive (and happier) working from home, plus it's so much cheaper and I get more parenting time in.
In India I've hardly found anyone being honest with jobs working inside offices. One they don't get paid enough and secondly they are overworked without any praise for their time. Most of the employers here are of the view that they own the employee if they pay a few bucks to him monthly.

I think that's a common attitude of employers everywhere

At least people get paid much more and on time in western countries. Here it's not the same. The feudalism is all over the workplaces in India. No respect for the workers who actually work.

I'm sure our pay is much more reliable (and obviously much higher), but I've had some pretty ridiculous experiences trying to get paid correctly and on time.

I think one or two bad experiences in entire career are understandable but when you ask to a Indian working in any sector, almost everyone will say that they had many such bad experiences. Only banks and some big companies have been paying on time. But that's hardly where 10% workforce is. The rest works in unorganised or in sectors where salary is manipulated.
For example if you work in a school here, mostly they show much more in papers than what they pay you.

It is many places.
