I went for a haircut today and gained an anecdote in the process.
Stepped foot into a chain saloon and was denied service. The lady staff explained apologetically that since today was designed as “Ladies Only”, no male members were present. She could not cut my hair. She then pointed me to another outlet several hundred metres away.
In the end, I had my haircut at the “Gents Only” outlet. I was astonished at how this hair saloon separated the men from the ladies, but I guess it could make a real difference for customers who wanted to let their hair loose (no pun intended). Anyway, thus lies the charm and appeal of travelling: to experience things I have never experienced before.

In the US there are many places that cut both men and women's hair, but also, I think there is an unwritten social rule that there are also many places where it would be inappropriate for a man to go and ask for his hair to be cut. I've never tried, but there is a certain type of salon that pretty clearly is for women only.
