This chart shows cumulative bitcoin capacity across all channels. Lightning nodes open payment channels with each other that are funded with bitcoin. When transactions are made across those channels, the channel balance is reflected without having to broadcast a transaction on chain. This creates a second layer on top of the bitcoin network that expands it capabilities.

REMINDER for newbies: That is ONLY what you can see publicly, through the public LN graph.
But there's another part of LN, that is PRIVATE, through private nodes and channels, and it could be at least 20% of the public one. But to be sincere, nobody can know that and is better that way.

I don’t think we will ever get accurate data about lightning capacity due to private channels.

This is just public channel data, no way to track the private stuff. Bottom line: total capacity is always way higher than what we see.
