The Ferengi are a species in Star Trek that are satirically hyper-capitalistic. They are always looking to acquire things and trade them in pursuit of more latinum.
I'm working my way through Deep Space Nine, which is pretty mid tbh, but has a Ferengi in the cast, Quark. The Ferengi are always referencing The Rules of Acquisition which they all seem to have memorized. This a list of all the rules that have been written into the various media.
Some of my favorites:
- Small print leads to large risk.
- Anything worth doing is worth doing for money.
- Sometimes the quickest way to find profits is to let them find you.
- A wise man can hear profit in the wind.
- Free advice is seldom cheap.
- Ask not what your profits can do for you, but what you can do for your profits.
- Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack.
- Deep down, everyone's a Ferengi.
DS9 gets really good eventually but it takes them a little while to build up to it.
I like 109, haha
I used to play this space strategy game called Master of Orion 2 which let you play as a custom race. I'd always base mine on Star Trek races. The Federation were the diplomatic, charismatic ones. The Romulans focused on espionage. Klingons focused on ground combat and aggressive fleets. And the Ferengi were good at making money. You could even create a Borg-like race (hive mind, no diplomacy allowed, cybernetic)
Awaw! Deep space nine starts slow and then goes incredibly hard. It ends with massive geo political intrigue, heavy religious/spiritual challenges, and lots of other wild philosophical stuff. I’m no tv fan, but I’d recommend anyone hang in for the final seasons of DS9. It’s also kind of the anti-startrek Star Trek show for obvious and not-so-obvious reasons alike.
Also, not sure by this post if you enjoy the character Quark or not, but his family (admittedly campy) becomes a really cool part of the show. My ethnically Jewish wife is still convinced the Ferengi are supposed to be racist depictions of “space Jews,” and if I remember right, even she really digs all of Quark’s family members’ character arks.
Oh hey, so did you get to/dig “Darmuk?”
